The ZIL-5301 (Russian: ЗИЛ-5301, mostly with the suffix Бычок - bull) is a truck made by the Russian manufacturer Sawod imeni Lichatschova, ZIL for short. The light truck was mass-produced from 1996 to 2014 (after-AMO Ф-15, AMO-2, AMO-3, ЗИC-5, ЗИC-5V, ЗИC-15, ЗИC-150, ЗИЛ-164, ЗИЛ-130 (1962-1977), ЗИЛ-130 (1977–1988), and ЗИЛ-4331) and was on the market in various different versions. The ZIL-3250 and KAwZ-3244 buses are based on the vehicle.
After financial problems at ZIL and failed sales, production would end by 2015, as the last ZIL truck. ZIL was originally planned to enter into further agreements with Mercedes for the local production of commercial vehicles to replace its old ZIL range of trucks, but its financial problems prevented this. The plan was for the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter to replace the ZIL-5301 after a few years, but after ZIL began to close, the deal was passed to competitor GAZ.
Description[]
As early as 1992, ZIL was busy developing the prototype of a new light truck. The resulting vehicle consisted of a combination of existing and purchased individual parts, including a chassis from a Mercedes-Benz T2, a cab from a ZIL-4331 and a gearbox from a ZIL-130 truck.
In the two years 1994 and 1995, a pre-series of around 200 vehicles was manufactured, which were still built on the chassis of the Mercedes transporter. Only with the start of mass production in 1996 was this procedure discontinued.
Most variants of the vehicle have been offered since 1996. Of importance are:
- ZIL-5301AO – the basic version with a platform, built up to 2010, also listed with the WE index,
- ZIL-5301JaO - current platform variant, since 2005 also referred to as ZIL-5301KE,
- ZIL-5301AA - with box body (long),
- ZIL-5301TO – double cab model,
- ZIL-5301BO – pure chassis without body,
- ZIL-5301SS - closed van (long).
Other superstructures or special model variants were also built, including dump trucks , a fire truck with a double cab and towing vehicles (in some cases also with three axles). There is also a model with all-wheel drive.
Several different MMS-D245.9 diesel engines were available for the truck. All are four-cylinder engines that work according to the four- stroke process . They differ, for example, in the fulfillment of emission standards . While some of the motors do not meet any EURO standard, the MMS-D245.9E3 type is approved for EURO 3.
The manufacturer went bankrupt around 2013, and in 2014 [2] the production of the ZIL-5301 vehicles was also ended.

Trivia
The ZIL-5301 is one of the very few production vehicles from Russian manufacturers whose designation does not adhere to the numbering system established in Russia according to state standards. Actually, the first digit should be a three and not a five, since the five incorrectly indicates a total weight of 14 to 20 tons. This is probably due to the fact that the ZIL plant, like many other Russian companies, suffered from an acute shortage of money at the beginning of the 1990s. Registering a new vehicle under a new code with the official bodies required a lot of documents, money and time. Instead, the type designation was simply taken over from a heavier, already registered vehicle. The "mistake" was never undone.
Although by German standards, with a total weight of almost seven tons, it can clearly be described as a truck , the Russian word delivery van (Russian: фургон) is also used for the model , especially in the case of closed bodies.
