The 740 filled the price and size gap between the Entry-level 240 and High-end 760.

Main Competitors[]

Volvo 164 & 260/760 (1968–1985)[]

The history of the 700 series can be traced back to the Volvo 164. Engine was a 3 liter straight 6. When introduced in October 1968 the 164 engine had twin Zenith/Stromberg carburetors. Fuel injection was introduced in 1972 as an option then standard from 1973 onwards. Unlike the 4-cylinder Volvo cars which were well known for being economical, the 164 had poor fuel economy and as a result of the 1973 Energy Crisis, Volvo became desperate to make a more fuel-efficient luxury car. In 1976 the Volvo 164 became the 260 with a French-built V6 engine. In 1983 the 260 evolved into the 760 and reliability improved, though gas mileage was still poor. Production ended in 1985 when Volvo dropped out of the high-end luxury sector of the market, following the impacts of the 1979 Fuel Crisis and also CAFE, a part of the EPA that severely punished automakers if their combined fuel economy dropped below 18 MPG. This became very unfriendly to six-cylinder Volvos whose combined MPG was only 16, making them "Gas Guzzlers".
