First Generation/Origins (1975–1983)[]
Few cars could match the comfort of the Princess. The Peugeot 504 had its comfort level but could not match the small straight six engine in refinement. British Leyland originally wanted this car to compete with the BMW 3-Series. The only car that could come anywhere near the refinement level of the Princess was the Mercedes-Benz 230. The Lancia Beta and Alfa Romeo Alfetta were more sporty than rational. The BMW 3-Series, Audi 100, Volvo 240 and Mercedes-Benz 230 were very rational but also bland-and-boring machines. Only the Saab could offer the right balance of comfort, rationality, and reliability and was seemingly the best alternative to the Princess.
