Recent Changes[]

  • In 2006, Toyota Australia introduced the 'Enhanced Safety Pack' for the Tarago. The pack has Vehicle Stability Control as standard along with traction control, front-seat side airbags, full-length curtain airbags and a driver's knee airbag. The Enhanced Safety Pack also debuts Toyota's Pre-Crash Seatbelt System. The system uses information from the brake assist system and/or stability control system to prepare the front seatbelts to anticipate for a collision. This pack is standard in GLX models but optional in GLi models with an extra price of $1,500 AUD.

Safety[]

In 2006, the Toyota Tarago scored 4 stars (30.45 out of 37) by ANCAP. The passenger compartment held its shape well for an MPV and the Tarago was given a default 16 points maximum for side impact protection but it wasn't tested for pole impact protection because the tested vehicle wasn't equipped with head protecting curtain airbags. The Tarago scored 2 stars for pedestrian protection.

ANCAP result for 2006 Toyota Tarago

2000-2006

UCSR result: 3 stars [1]

1991-1999

UCSR result: 4 stars, average harm to other motorists [2]

When tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Previa received a poor rating due to the marginal safety cage, poor restraints and dummy kinematics possible head and neck injuries, and the likely injuries to the lower legs. [1]

1983-1989

UCSR result: Signifficantly worse than average, more harm to other motorists [3]

Current Generation: (YYYY–present)[]

Fifth generation (YYYY–YYYY)[]

Fourth generation (YYYY–YYYY)[]

Third generation (YYYY–YYYY)[]

The main difference with the older generation is that the Previa adapted a front wheel drive layout with the engine placed in the front rather than underneath the floor. That gave a signifficantly more user-friendly cabin along with easier access and a walk-through cabin thanks to the flat floor.

Second generation (1990–2000)[]

Released in 1990, the Previa had set van-based people movers apart. Built and purpose-designed from the ground up, it had revolutionised people movers in the decade in terms of safety, efficiency, riding and everything else. First of all, the second generation Previa was well recognisable for its aerodynamic shape which benefitted fuel economy. Unlike some van-based people movers such as a Nissan Serena, the Previa features a monocoque and is widely spaced for passengers to sit lower. To lower the car's centre of gravity, the mid-mounted engine was mounted as low as possible.

The second generation Previa was also regarded as the most safest people mover in its time thanks to its front crumple zone which is a great help for safety of front passengers unlike its predecessor.
