The Toyota Cressida was an upper-midsize car built by Toyota built from December 1976 to February 1993. It was originally intended to compete with European cars such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Volvo. However it fell more inline with mainstream American family cars such as Buick, Oldsmobile, Mercury and Chrysler yet had a better reputation than its American competition thanks to features like fuel injection and overhead cam timing. Like the smaller Corolla and Corona (The forerunner to the Camry) it had not only better reliability than Ford, GM and Chrysler but was also more reliable than Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Volvo.

Engine and Transmission[]
The Cressida when introduced in December 1976 had the carbureted 2.6 liter straight 6 and a choice of manual or automatic transmission. From 1978 onwards, North American models had the fuel injected version of the 2.6 liter straight 6 and standard automatic transmission. The Cressida (along with the Supra) was one of the first fuel injected Toyota products sold in the US and Canada.

The Cressida was introduced in December 1976. It was imported to North America starting with the 1978 model and was one of the first Toyota products in North America to feature fuel injection. Engine was the 2.6 liter 4M-E straight 6. Japan, Europe and the rest of the world had the carbureted version of this engine.
