Engine and Transmission

Tata Indica is truly, the first Indian car. It is the manifestation of the vision of Ratan Tata (Chairman, Tata Motors) who dreamt to build a car keeping in mind, the Zen's size, Ambassador's internal dimensions, price of a Maruti Alto and running cost of diesel, which, combining all these, has now become Tata Indica V2. Tata Indica perfectly understood Indian conditions and satisfied them. The Indica V2 is spacious enough to accommodate large Indian families, and ofcourse the entire luggage that came with them. The powerful engine of the Tata Indica ensured it took the burden of the extra weight.

The Tata Indica also had a rugged built for miles of pot-hole ridden roads, and at times no road at all, just paths. The latest variant of Indica is the Tata Indica V2 Turbomax DLE and Tata Indica V2 Turbomax DLS. The new version of the Tata Indica is more powerful in terms of engine, greater at fuel efficiency and conforms to BS IV emission norms. The engine of the new variant produces a top power of 71 Ps at 4500 rpm and generates a peak torque of 135 Nm at 3500 rpm by 1405cc, 475 IDI Turbo Intercool Diesel engine. The Tata Indica V2 comes with 1396cc,4 Inline cylinder that develops a max power of 53.5 Ps at 5500 rpm and belts out highest torque of 85 Nm at 2500 rpm. Criticisms

The Rover cityrover was criticised for the high asking price compered to what you got with it. "Citroen C2, Skoda Fabia,Fiat Panda... even the aged Ford Ka and Rover's own 25 are much nicer to drive, and feel more modern.[1]"

Rover CityRover

MG Rover was reported to be paying Tata £3,000 for each car, despite each model featuring a Rover corporate nose and revised suspension setting, customers where not happy with the £7,000 asking price .

By 2004 there where plans to replace the CityRover, however due to Rover's financial woes the car never left the drawing board.

Sales where far away from MG Rover's expectations so, in an attempt to make the car sell, MG Rover reduced the asking price by £900 and options such as power steering, air conditioning and ABS brakes became standard.

Tata has decided to replace the first genration with a new generation, the most noticable difference being the large headlights. [2]

Rover CityRover (2003–2005)

Due to MG-Rover's financial troubles, Rover was unable to make its own new cars. Tata started to import its Indicas to the UK and they were re-badged as Rovers. However the sales were very poor. The car was never tested for safety.

First Generation/Origins (1998–2008)

Ratan Tata wanted to make the ideal car for India, something with the price of the Maruti 800, the interior space of the Hindustan Ambassador yet with a modern feel. It would become the first small car in Tata's line up. The car was named Indica (the CAr for INDIa). The Tata Indica was first revealed at the 1998 New Delhi Auto show and went into production later that year. Indica was marketed as Big....Small car referring to the large interior compared to the overall size of the car. Within only two weeks of its showing it had well over 115,000 pre-orders and within fewer than two years it became the most popular car in India. In 2003 the Tata Indica was imported to the UK and rebadged as the Rover CityRover. By 2004 Tata launched a more sporty version of the Indica called the V2. In 2006 Tata Motors introduced the Xeta – The Cure For The Common Car. Its 1.4 litre eXtra fuel Efficient Torque Advantage (XETA) petrol engine delivers a frugal fuel consumption at 14 Kmpl*. Without any compromise in power and torque, which at 70 PS and 12.4 kgm, make every drive a thrill. [3]
