The Subaru Baja crossover pickup truck that was built by Subaru of Indiana, Inc. from 2002-2006 was based significantly on the Legacy and Subaru Outback wagons. Instead of a large wagon's cargo area, the four-door, four passenger vehicle featured an open bed, complete with a tailgate and a pass-through to the passenger compartment. The Baja was introduced in early 2002 following Subaru's 2000 ST/X concept -- strongly echoing Subaru's own earlier BRAT. The BRAT featured two-doors mated to pickup style bed, ala the Ford Ranchero and Chevrolet El Camino. Subaru discontinued BAJA production in 2006 after selling fewer than 30,000 units. The Baja targeted young drivers and suburbanites needing passenger and light-duty cargo capacity in an efficient package. The original 2003 model came with leather seats, power driver's seat, and sunroof. The more economical Sport model, equipped with cloth interior and manual seats, was introduced later in the production year. 2004 offered a new 2.5 L Turbo model with cloth or leather interior and manual or automatic Sportshift transmissions. The Baja Sport offers different paint and trim options but remains much the same as 2003. Some new color options and just a few minor changes were made for the 2005 model. All models were given a power outlet in the center console, rear seatback net pocket, and Turbo models with leather came standard with a new tonneau bed cover.
