A gear stick (also gearstick, gear lever and gear shifter) is the lever used to change gear in a vehicle, such as an automobile, with manual transmission or automatic transmission.
The gear knob (or shifter knob) is at the end of the gear stick; it is used to hold the gear stick and change gear, normally while depressing the clutch pedal with the left foot to disengage the engine from the wheels in a manual transmission vehicle. Typically the gear knob includes a diagram or shift pattern of the positions to which the gear stick may be moved when changing gear.
