"Peterbilt 389" models (after-1913 White 1-Ton Truck, White Model 51R Truck, White Model 621 Truck, Peterbilt model 260, Peterbilt 280/350, Peterbilt 281/351, Peterbilt 359, and Peterbilt 379) are marketed mainly to the American market and are branded as the technologically updated successor of the classic " Peterbilt 379 ". They have a similar design designed to transmit power and include a large cabin , a windshield consisting of two square windows , large gas exhausts (exhaust) on the sides, a front engine compartment ("nose") and a front "grill" (engine ventilation mesh) with the company logo. However, the "389" models are also available for export worldwide, including to Australia where they are marketed with a right-hand drive system.
The "Peterbilt 389" model was presented for the first time at the "Mid-America Trucking Show" in 2006 . "Peterbilt 389" trucks are built in the same configurations as the " Peterbilt 379 " model and replaced them in production as of March 2007.
Technical characteristics[]
The Peterbilt 389 is a heavy semi-trailer truck, and the main part of it is the trailer to which different trailers can be attached . The trailer consists of a large driver's cab, an optional sleeper an engine compartment, a rear outrigger (to which the trailer is attached), 3 wheel axles, large fuel tanks and other assemblies mounted on a strong steel chassis
The large driver's cabin is designed similar to the Peterbilt 379 and is designed to transmit power. The windshield is large and divided into two windows topped by sun visors. On both sides of the driver's cabin stand large vertical exhaust pipes . The "grill" at the front of the engine compartment is large in area and tall, and in front of it there is usually a metal protective plate or grille. On both sides of the "grill" and on the roof, lanterns and street lights are installed. The driver's cabin is made of aluminum in order to reduce weight and reduce fuel consumption. As a default, an aerodynamic canopy is installed on it (and on the sleeping compartment, if available) to reduce drag . In front of the driver's cabin is the engine compartment, which protrudes forward like a long "nose". The advantage of this configuration is the ease of access to the engine, which makes field repairs particularly easy.
The truck is offered with several engine models for the customer to choose, including " Paccar " and " Cummins " diesel engines ,when the power is in the range of 405-600 hp (302-447 kW ). The engine includes Smartlinq digital control that monitors the engine in real time and transmits information about its performance and integrity to the driver as well as to the person responsible for the vehicle's integrity. The information is presented to the driver in real time on indicators and a screen 7 " (18 cm ) touch . Common engine models are:
- PACCAR MX 13 diesel engine, power : 500 hp (370 kW ), power torque : 1,850 lb-ft (2508 newton-meters).
- Cummins ISX 2350 diesel engine, power : 600 hp (450 kW ), power torque : 2050 lb-ft (2779 newton-meters).
- Cummins ISX 15 gas engine , power : 600 hp (450 kW ), power torque : 2050 lb-ft (2779 newton-meters).
In large countries, such as the United States and Australia , a transport journey can last several days and therefore many trucks offer a sleeper compartment located behind the driver's cabin and includes a bed , air conditioning and storage compartments for personal belongings. The sleeping compartment allows the driver to take rest breaks and even sleep at night without being dependent on road hotels ( motel ). In Peterbilt 389 you can choose whether to add a sleeping compartment or not (Peterbilt offers both options). There are sleeping compartments in several configurations additional to the driver's cabin (including a sleeping compartment with a low roof) as well as with a sleeping compartment inside the driver's cabin (cabin). By default, an aerodynamic canopy is installed on the driver's cabin and sleeping cabin to reduce drag and reduce fuel consumption .
