The Maybach 57 and 62 were the first automobile models of the Maybach brand since the brand's revival by Daimler AG. They are derived from the Mercedes-Benz Maybach concept car presented at the 1997 Tokyo Motorshow (which was based on the Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedan).
DaimlerChrysler attempted to buy the Rolls-Royce/Bentley marque when Vickers offered the company up for sale. When this attempt failed (they were outbid by BMW and Volkswagen respectively) they introduced the Maybach as a direct challenger in 2002. Both models are variants of the same ultra-luxurious automobile. The model numbers reflect the respective lengths of the automobiles in decimetres; the 57 is more likely to be owner-driven while the longer 62 is designed with a chauffeur in mind. The engine is a Mercedes-sourced 5.5-liter twin-turbo V12, generating 550 hp. The prices range from US$305,000 to $357,000 (£240,000 to £250,000)—priced to directly compete with top-of-the-line Bentley and Rolls-Royce automobiles.
As of 2004, only 600 units had been sold. DaimlerChrysler projects that they may sell less than the 1,000 units expected. Just 152 Maybachs were sold in the United States in 2005, with worldwide production down to 300 units.
As of 2005 there is talk of a smaller, cheaper Maybach 51, although this has not been confirmed by Maybach.
Recent Changes[]
- The Maybach 62 and 62S received its first mid-cycle facelift at the 2010 Beijing Motor Show. Among the changes also include powertrain upgrades: the standard engine churns out the same as before but it has been optimized for marginally reduced emissions and fuel consumption while the S gets 18 more hp for a total of 630 hp. Inside, the familiar fare of reclining seats and optional partition to separate passengers from chauffeur are retained, however, a 19-inch rear screen can now be specified instead of the individual 9.5-inch monitors, on which plutocrats can view camera feeds from around the vehicle. The perfume atomizer from the Zeppelin model can also be ordered on the rest of the range now as well, and there's available wireless internet and seat piping either braided or embedded with Swarovski crystals.
- At the 2009 Geneva Motor Show, Maybach unveiled a pair of 100 unit special edition models of both the 57 and 62 called the Zeppelin. In the late 20's and early 30's, the Zeppelin nameplate denoted the cream of the crop of Maybach's lineup, in homage to Wilhelm Maybach's work developing the V12 engines that powered the eponymous airships. 81 years later, the Zeppelin name means access to a 6.0L twin turbo V12 producing 640hp (471kW) and 738lb-ft (1,000Nm) of torque and luxury never before experienced in a land-based vehicle save for, perhaps, the Blue Train. The entire interior is decadently attired in 'California beige' leather with 'Stromboli black' contrast stitching and piano black highlights. Special accessories include silver champagne glasses engraved with the Zeppelin logo and an acrylic ball that dispenses a bespoke fragrance through the cabin at the push of a button. A choice of two fragrances are available from the factory, one described as 'light and refreshing', another as 'woody'. Custom scents can also be had, at a cost of €3,950 ($5,100) plus taxes. Outside, the Zeppelins will be distinguishable by a unique two-tone livery composed of ‘Rocky Mountains’ light brown and ‘Taiga black’, restlyed side mirrors and 20in wheels in a dark chrome finish. As you might imagine, luxury like this doesn't come cheap and evidence for this can be found on the bill: €406,000 ($524,000) for the 57 and €473,200 ($610,000) for the 62. [1]

Called the 57S Coupe Special, only 100 units will be built with a price tag of €650,000 (US$805,000). To transform the car, Xenatec simply made the A and C pillars more rakish and slightly lowering the roofline. The car still sports the 57S sedan's massive footprint and, we expect, its weight so there will be little to no performance advantage. [2]

Maybach 57 S[]
DaimlerChrysler revealed the Maybach 57 S at the 2005 Geneva Motor Show. It uses a 6.0 L version of the V12 engine manufactured by Mercedes-AMG. Power output is 604 hp (450 kW) and 738 ft·lbf (1000 N·m), providing a sub-5 second sprint to 60 mph (97 km/h). It also rides 0.5 in (13 mm) lower on 20 in (508 mm) wheels. The North American unveiling was at the Los Angeles Auto Show in January 2006.
Brabus Maybach[]
Legendary tuning firm Brabus, famous for high-performance and stylistic aftermarket modifications to Mercedes-Benz and Smart automobiles, produced a version of the 57/62 in 2004 which adds significant performance, features and style to the models. Electronically limited to a 300 km/h speed limit, these large vehicles produce a staggering 1026 N·m of torque and accelerate from standstill to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds.
This makes the Brabus Maybach arguably the fastest super-luxury motorcar in the world, a trend which was started in 1968 by the Mercedes-Benz 300SEL 6.3.
Maybach 62[]
The Maybach 62 includes many luxury features including all featues on the 57 and includes standard features such as fully reclining rear seats, Maybach four-zone climate control, tinted windows, infrared-reflecting laminated glass all round, AirMATIC dual-control air suspension, display instruments in rear roof liner (showing speed, time, and outside temperature), folding rear tables (left and right), 21-speaker BOSE Surround Everywhere sound system, and a refrigerator compartment. The Maybach 62 also includes an array of additional features such as Cockpit Management and Navigation System (COMAND), which includes DVD navigation, CD changer in rear seats, DVD players and TV tuners front and rear, two rear LCD TV screens including remote control and two sets of headphones, and automatic closing doors.
Even though the Maybach 62 has all these features included, optional extras were available. Some of these are a panoramic glass sunroof at a cost of $11,670, and an external communication system, and a loudspeaker and microphone system which allows the occupant in the rear of the Maybach to converse with people outside the car. This option came at a cost of $1,780. Additionally, a retractable electrotransparent partition screen between the driver and the rear occupants costs $23,780 and, most expensive, a high-protection GUARD B4 Package costs an additional $151,810.
