The XK series (XK8, XKR, and XK) is a modern Grand Touring coupe and convertible from Jaguar. Production began in 1996 for the 1997 model year, replacing the XJS,. The XK8 was the first 8 cylinder vehicle produced by Jaguar, introducing the new Jaguar AJ-V8 engine. Production ended in 2014.

Recent Changes[]

  • The XKR-S GT is a limited (30 units in United States and Canada, 10 units in the UK; worldwide production was 45 units) version of XKR-S coupé. Technical highlights included a six-speed transmission, active electronic differential, bespoke aerodynamic components and suspension developments to increase downforce and optimised high-speed cornering ability (a wider front track, increased camber, revised bushings, a new steering system and faster steering ratio, height-adjustable and bespoke adaptive dampers with twin spring system and increased rates of 68% at the front and 25% at the rear), a carbon ceramic brake system (398 mm and 380 mm front/rear discs, 6/4-piston front/rear monoblock calipers)
  • In March 2011, on the launch of the XKR-S at the Geneva Motor Show, Jaguar revealed the details of a facelift for the 2012 XK MY. The new specification included front and rear styling changes and internal trim changes with navigation system and a backup camera included as standard equipment. In addition to standard XK and XKR, the revised body shape formed the basis for the following models.
  • For 2011, in yet another way to celebrate its 75th Anniversary, Jaguar has launched a limited edition of 175 unit XK at the Pebble Beach Concours D'Elegance called XKR175 Coupe. Powered by the standard 510 hp mill, the special cat is dressed up with revised aerodynamic package, a different rear diffuser, a larger rear spoiler, 20-inch alloy wheels and red brake calipers, Jaguar's Ultimate Black paint, numbered sill tread plates, Warm Charcoal' leather with 'Cranberry' stitching, Piano Black trim veneer and a $104,500 price tag. Despite this, the car's electronically-limited top speed has been raised to 174mph (280km/h). [1]


  • To celebrate its 75th Anniversary, Jaguar created a limited edition of 75 unit XKR called, aptly, the XKR 75. The special edition features a unique livery of stratus grey with silver decals above the front fenders and rear haunches outside and charcoal leather with contrasting ivory stitching, gloss piano black veneer and Jet suedecloth headliner inside. Jaguar has also squeezed out 530 hp (up 20 hp) and 483 pound-feet of torque from the supercharged 5.0 litre V8 which propels the feral cat to 60 mph from standstill in 4.4 seconds and on to an electronically governed top speed of 174 mph. Jaguar say it will "deliver a combination of enhanced performance, superb chassis and steering control and grip levels to inspire the driving enthusiast to explore the true potential of the XKR's capabilities". The car debuts at the 2010 Goodwood Festival of Speed with orders being taken by July of 2010. Pricing starts from £85,500. [2]
  • The 2010 Geneva Motor Show saw the unveiling of two trim packages for the XKR dubbed the XKR Speed Pack and XKR Black Pack. Essentially, the Speed Pack removes the 155 mph speed governor to allow the feral kitty to stretch its legs to 174 mph while the Black pack is an appearance package that adds niceties such as gloss black 20-inch Kalimnos wheels, gloss black chrome grille and side vents, red brake calipers and a body-colored aero-kit. Combined, it is called the XKR Special Edition. Pricing in the UK for the Speed Pack has been set at £3,500 while the Black Pack costs an additional £500.[3]
  • Based on the standard XKR, the XKR 'Goodwood Special' is a prototype designed to explore the sportier side of the XKR's character and allow Jaguar's engineering team to extend performance boundaries. Unveiled at the 2009 Goodwood Festival of Speed, the engine was uprated to generate a maximum power output of 530 PS (390 kW; 523 hp) and 700 N⋅m (516 lbf⋅ft) of torque. The car featured a louder exhaust, 21-inch alloy wheels and a lowered ride-height as well as a Lime Green body colour and satin graphite detailing on the front grilles, headlights, door mirrors, side window surrounds, rear signature blade and bonnet louvres.
  • For 2010, Jaguar updates the XKR with the latest generation of Jaguar's AJ-V8 engine. The supercharged 5.0 litre unit now pumps out 510 hp and 461 lb-ft of torque, the first to break the 500 hp mark since the Jaguar XJ220 from 18 years ago. This bump in power is good for launching the sports car to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds. The regular XK also gets the new powerplant but is naturally aspirated rather than "enhanced". This version makes 385 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque. Besides the new motivation, the new XKR also gets a new facelift and Jaguar's 6-speed JaguarDrive Selector Automatic with Jaguar Sequential Shift™ Manumatic transmission first seen in the Jaguar XF.   • A more powerful XKR version having a supercharged variant of the engine was introduced in 2007. Aesthetic differences as compared to the XK include a redesigned front bumper and hood louvres for improved engine airflow. The 4.2 litre Supercharged V8 (AJ34S) and Made 420 PS (310 kW; 410 hp) at 6,250 rpm, 560 N⋅m (413 lb⋅ft) at 3,500 rpm And Went On To A Limited Top Speed Of 250 km/h (155 mph) (limited) The XKR Was Developed To Attract Younger Buyers To Redeem Jaguar's Reputation For Notoriously Older Customers.
  • In commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the XK sports car that started with the XK120 in 1948, Jaguar has released a UK only limited edition XK60 model, based on the standard XK, but featuring a body kit with front and rear spoilers, sideskirts and mesh grille inserts, 20 inch 'Senta' alloy wheels, larger chrome exhaust finishers, and unique aluminium detailing on the interior.[1]
  • Jaguar has officially confirmed that a diesel variant of the XK will be released in Europe, largely due to the sales success of the BMW 635d, which has shown that performance diesel GT cars can and do sell, and also down to the increasing costs of fuel. The car is rumoured to feature a version of the current 2.7 TDV6 twin turbo diesel engine found in the rest of the Jaguar range, enlarged to 3.0 litres and with an expected power output of 260 hp. The 3.5 litre V8 petrol engine was never introduced to the European XK range, and in fact the engine was withdrawn from sale from other Jaguar models, including the XJ series.
  • The 2008 XKR Portfolio is a version of the XKR developed by Jaguar's Special Vehicles team and Alcon, it is often incorrectly referred to as a 2007 model due to being built and first sold in 2007. It includes 400 mm diameter front and 350 mm rear brake discs, six-piston front calipers and four-piston rear calipers, 20-inch five-spoke Cremona wheels, power vents, a Celestial Black body colour (optional Liquid Silver for UK and Switzerland models), Engine-Spun aluminium veneer or optional Satin American Walnut veneer, an alloy and leather gearshift selector, soft-grab door handles, contrast stitching throughout the cabin, leather-edged mats with Jaguar logos, Portfolio treadplates on the doorsills and a 525 W Premium Audio system with Dolby Pro Logic II surround sound system by Bowers & Wilkins.

Jag bonnet

The new XK has introduced a world first in pedestrian safety. In numerous pedestrian collisions with vehicles, head injuries occur when a pedestrian's head impacts with the bonnet of the vehicle. However, the injuries are not usually sustained from the bonnet itself, rather the bonnet deforming and the pedestrian's head colliding with the engine block underneath.

Jaguar's innovation is to have sensors in the front bumper that determine if a pedestrian has indeed been struck and this then triggers two pyrotechnical charges that instantaneously lift the bonnet, providing extra distance between engine and head. In effect, the bonnet becomes the exterior equivalent of an airbag: The hood's sheet metal may not be soft, but it's much more accommodating than a solid engine block.

An Ultimate Black Metallic Jaguar XKR (Post-Facelift)

The X150's design was completed in 2002 and was previewed by Advanced Lightweight Coupé (ALC) which was first seen at the 2005 North American International Auto Show. The designer, Ian Callum, was also responsible for the Aston Martin DB7 and Vanquish grand tourers. The X150's grille is inspired by that of the 1961 E-Type.[3] Introduced in the market in 2006, the X150 has a bonded and riveted aluminium monocoque chassis shared with the XJ and uses an all-aluminium construction. The X150 was the second Jaguar automobile assembled at the newly acquired Castle Bromwich plant alongside the XJ saloon. The X150, as compared to the X100 is 61.0 mm (2.4 in) wider and is 162.6 mm (6.4 in) longer. It is also 91 kg (200 lb) lighter than the X100 due to its aluminium construction resulting in performance and fuel consumption improvements. The 4.2-litre V8 engine was carried over from its predecessor and is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission manufactured by ZF Friedrichshafen. Unlike the X100, the X150 has no wood trim on the interior offered as standard equipment. A notable feature on the interior was steering column mounted shift paddles for easier gear changes. A more powerful XKR version having a supercharged variant of the engine was introduced in 2007. Aesthetic differences as compared to the XK include a redesigned front bumper and hood louvres for improved engine airflow.[4]

The X150 convertible shares the same engine options as the coupé and features a conventional cloth top that requires 18 seconds for operation.

The XK received a facelift in 2009,[5] with minor alterations to front and rear lights and bumper designs, together with the introduction of a new 5.0-litre V8 for both the naturally aspirated XK and the supercharged XKR. The interior also received some changes, in particular the introduction of the XF style rotary gear selector mated to the new ZF automatic transmission. In 2010, Jaguar added the Speed Pack option, with aerodynamic bodykit and speed limiter increased to 280 km/h (174 mph), and the Black Pack, with black wheels and trim. The XK received a second and more minor facelift in 2011 with new front bumper and light design,[6] which was presented at the New York Auto Show

The range was extended in 2011, with the introduction of the new and powerful XKR-S at the Geneva Motor Show, featuring an upgraded XKR engine generating a maximum power output of 550 PS (405 kW; 542 hp),[7] and 680 N⋅m (502 lb⋅ft) of torque. The XKR-S badge was first used on the 2008 special edition XK. Jaguar claimed that this new version was the fastest production Jaguar ever at the time of its introduction,[citation needed] having a top speed of 299 km/h (186 mph) and accelerating from 0-97 km/h (60 mph) in 4.2 seconds (0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.4 seconds).

The X150 is noted for its all-aluminium construction and its styling by Ian Callum, with details evoking prominent earlier Jaguar models, e.g., the Sayer nose recalling the XP/11 sports racing prototype of 1953 and adopted for the D-type – and the grill located badge recalling the E-type.

All 4.2-litre models were fitted with a six-speed ZF 6HP26 automatic transmission with Jaguar Sequential Shift and J-gate gear selector. All 5.0-litre models were fitted with a six-speed ZF 6HP28 and the JaguarDrive rotary gear selector.

Unveiled at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, the XKR-S is a high performance version of the XKR. Notable changes over the standard XKR include a supercharged AJ-V8 Gen III R direct-injection V8 engine having a maximum power output of 550 PS (405 kW; 542 hp) at 6,000 to 6,500 rpm and 680 N⋅m (502 lbf⋅ft) of torque at 2,500 to 5,500 rpm, an increased top speed of 300 km/h (186 mph), active sports exhaust, a bespoke suspension system, 16-way adjustable memory sports seats with carbon fibre effect leather, reprogrammed Adaptive Dynamics, 20-inch Vulcan wheels and Pirelli P-Zero tyres along with Jaguar's High Performance Braking System.

Jaguar claims the more assertive styling (which encompasses changes made across the XK range) is dictated as much by function as form. The front and rear aerodynamic enhancements are apparently required to maintain contact with the ground at the XKR-S’s higher top speed which is an electronically governed 186mph.

Changes to the chassis mirror those previewed on the limited-run Edition 75 and amount to 28 percent stiffer spring rates over the standard XKR's, a new aluminium steering knuckle, reprogrammed damper and differential controls, wider tyres and lighter wheels.

Special editions[]

XKR-S

The XKR-S was released in July 2008 as a limited edition of only 200 cars sold exclusively in Europe, 50 of which were sold in the UK market, and all 50 were pre-sold before the car ever arrived in Jaguar dealer showrooms. The XKR-S was available as a coupe only, and featured several modifications over the standard XKR, firstly the engine management system was altered to increase the top speed (which was previously limited to 155 mph) to 174 mph, although this was still a restricted top speed, making the XKR-S the fastest production Jaguar since the XJ220. The XKR-S had unique 20 inch Vortex alloys which were an inch wider than the standard 20 inch XKR items, a subtle aerodynamic body kit that reduced lift, the Alcon brake discs and calipers from the XKR Portfolio model, along with its Bowers and Wilkins sound system, and was only available in metallic black with charcoal luuxury sport leather seats and a unique piano black finish on the dashboard. XKR Portfolio

The XKR Portfolio was released in early 2007 featuring exclusive Celestial Black paint and 20-inch Cremona five-spoke alloy wheels. Interior enhancements included, as standard, an engine-spun aluminium veneer, or an optional Satin American Walnut veneer.

There were no performance enhancements to the 4.2-litre supercharged engine, however the brakes were substantially upgraded with the use of Alcon 6-piston calipers on 400mm crescent-grooved discs at the front, and 4-piston calipers on 350mm discs at the rear.[4]

Motorsport[]

Apex Motorsport has developed a Jaguar XKR GT3 racing car for the FIA GT3 European Championship. Based on a stripped-down XKR chassis, and using the 4.2-litre supercharged V8 engine, power output has been increased to approximately 500bhp. Originally intending a short development schedule and launching the car at the Silverstone GT3 race in May 2007, development proved problematic and the car's entry into the championship was delayed, but has run successfully in the 2008 championshp.[5]

First Generation/Origins (1997–2006)[]

The 1997 XK8 was available in coupe or convertible forms and with either a supercharged 390 hp (287 kW) or naturally aspirated 290 hp (213 kW) engine. The supercharged variant is known as the XKR. The first-generation XK series shares its platform with the Aston Martin DB7. Both cars are derived from the Jaguar XJS, though the platform has been extensively changed.

Both the XK8 and XKR are limited to a top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h) by a computer governor, giving them a lower top speed than the car they replaced.

The XK range came standard with 18-inch alloy wheels, and 19 and 20-inch wheels were available for additional cost. A navigation system and self-leveling xenon headlamps are standard with the XKR and as options for the XK8. Jaguar’s Adaptive Cruise Control was an optional feature available on both models. Both come with all-leather interior, burl walnut trim, and side airbags.

The XK series price at launch was £47,950 for the coupé and £56,850 for the convertible.[6]

Competitors include the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class, BMW 6-Series, Lexus SC 430, Cadillac XLR, Audi R8, and Maserati Spyder.

Special editions[]

Several limited-edition XKR coupes and convertibles have been produced to mark important events in Jaguar’s history.

XKR Silverstone

The first was the 2001 XKR Silverstone, launched to celebrate Jaguar's entry into Formula 1. Only 250 were released in North America, on a total of 600 worldwide (first edition: 100 (For Europe only), then 500 more (sold worldwide)). It featured a Platinum paint finish, high-performance package (same engine as the standard XKR, but improved transmission, suspension and brakes and 20" Silver BBS Detroit wheels) and custom interior.

To celebrate the launch Jaguar invited buyers of these cars to the Formula One test day at Silverstone on 13 April 2000.[7]

XKR 100

The XKR 100 followed in 2002, of which 30 coupes and 270 convertibles were sold in North America. The XKR 100 featured an Anthracite paint finish, 20-inch modular wheels, Brembo brakes, and custom interior.

XKR 400

The XKR 400 was an upgraded performance version of the existing XKR, launched in August 2003 and available in both coupé and convertible models. Special features included black, silver and grey paint, Alcantara seat inserts and black dashboard.[6]

XKR Portfolio

The XKR Portfolio emerged for the North American market in 2004. Two hundred were released in North America: 100 in Jupiter red and 100 in Coronado blue. It featured 20-inch BBS Detroit alloy wheels, Recaro sports seats with contrasting leather trim, and an all leather steering wheel.[8]

XK Victory

The XK Victory was launched to celebrate the XKs success in the American Trans-Am race series.[6]

4.2-S

In Europe the 4.2-S was unveiled at Geneva on 1st March 2005. Features for the 4.2-S Four included new exterior and interior colours and two distinct veneer options for the instrument panel, polished door treadplates with chequered-flag emblems and embossed, leather-edged floor mats. The revised white Jaguar badge on the bonnet also feature chequered accents. New 19" Atlas wheels plus cross-drilled Brembo brake discs, red wheel badges and red brake calipers were also fitted. The 4.2-S had a carbonfibre-veneer dashboard, with elm veneer as a no-cost option and unique 20" split-rim BBS Perseus wheels.[6]

XKR-R

Jaguar also produced a concept car called the XKR-R which was very similar to the production XKR, but with a more powerful engine and improved handling. The naming convention is similar to that of the S-Type R special edition. Unlike the S-Type R, it remained a concept car and was never put into production.

The XKR-R was built from the ground up using new, modified and custom-built parts. The suspension was lowered by 30mm over the standard XK8 and fitted with 20-inch R-Performance wheels. At the rear the suspension utilized the rear floor area from the S-Type saloon together with its rear axle. The gearbox was replaced with a customized Tremec T-56 six-speed manual and mated to an AP Racing twin-plate clutch.[6]
