Performance[]

Please make sure to write information of the vehicle's performance in a third-person point of view. This section should include information about the car's acceleration figures, handling, braking, etc.

If using information gathered from Road Test articles from a reputable automotive source, then please make sure to cite the quote.

Reliability[]

Automatic transmissions should be checked closely as well as the electrics to see if they function properly. The majority of these cars is they they had been driven hard so wear and tear in the clutch, brakes and tyres should be looked at. Owners must be wary of modified versions because it can affect reliability and therefore, shorten the car's lifespan. The engine can get plauged by rattly valve mechanisms showing early signs of engine wear unless it had been propely serviced and the timing belt should be replaced every 90,000 km (56,250 miles). Otherwise, the belt will break causing major engine damage. Squeaks and rattles are common.

The 2003- 2006 Tiburons have been known for premature clutch failure and multiple alignment issues.

  • RECALL ALERT: On April 18, 2009, Hyundai issued a recall alert affecting 170,610 MY2001-2003 Elantra and MY2003 Tiburon and 85,036 MY2001-2003 Santa Fe models due to corrosion on the rear suspension trailing arm. This is already on top of an earlier recall affecting 170,000 Sonata and XG300/350 models. The recall primarily affects vehicles originally sold or currently registered in the 'salt-belt' states of Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia. Hyundai urges owners to visit their local dealer for inspection and Hyundai itself is available for contact over the issue at 1-800-633-5151. [1]

Final Generation: (2003–2008)[]

Second generation (1999–2002)[]

Based on the current Avante platform, this car is front wheel drive. The 1999-2001 Tiburons were marketed as the Turbulence in its home market of South Korea. Its successor model is marketed as the Tuscani. Outside South Korea, with the exception of North America, the car is marketed as the Coupé. In North America, it retains the Tiburon nameplate. Engine choices include a 1.6, 1.8, or 2.0 inline four-cylinder Beta engine with variable valve timing on the inlet valves (CVVT) or a 2.7L V6 Delta engine. The car is available with a five- or six-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission.

First Generation/Origins (1996–1999)[]

Hyundai first produced the Tiburon in 1996. All versions of the Tiburon manufactured from 1996-2001 were called RD Tiburons. There was no 2002 Tiburon. It was available in a few foreign markets with engine choices of either 1.6L or 1.8L. In the United States, The Tiburon was first offered in 1997 with an engine choice of 1.8L or 2.0L. Then Hyundai upgraded the Tiburon to the available 2.0L engine choice only with the 1998 model year. It is rumored that in 1999, Hyundai invested a large amount of money into the body style of the Tiburon, but left the engine unchanged. The Tiburons manufactured from 1999 to 2001 are referred to as 2nd generation RD Tiburons (RD2's). The 2.0L was rated at 140 hp at the crankshaft (the car's manual specifies 102kw at the flywheel). The 1.6L was not offered in America. The 2.0L produces a 0-60 time of 7.1s, with a 1/4 mile time of 16.5s. Base weight was around 2556, giving the RD Tiburon a higher power to weight ratio than the newer GK 2.0L. None of the RD tiburons had ABS.

Early model GK (2003+ Tiburon) GT V6's were rated at 170 horsepower, while newer ones are rated at 173 hp SAE . The 2.0 inline four-cylinder produce 145 hp at 6000 rpm and 184 N·m (138 ft·lbf) of torque at 4500 rpm. The 1.6 produces 105 hp @ 5,800 rpm and 143 N·m @ 4,500 rpm. The V6 engine produces 173 hp @ 6000 rpm and 245 N·m (181 ft·lbf) @ 3800 rpm. It can produce 0 to 100 km/h times of 7.2 seconds.

Design quirks and oddities[]

In Australia, the Tiburon remains as the only compact coupe in the market.

There is speculation the Tiburon suspension was developed by Porsche, and the Body was designed by Paninafarina who has made many Ferraris.

2003 Tiburon coupes have shark fin vents on each side,

The name Tiburon loosely trabslates into shark
