Second generation (1993–1997)[edit | edit source]
The second generation of the Probe was designed to target the successful Acura Integra and the Eclipse in the sport coupe market. It was a complete redesign. The bodywork was sleeker and the engine choices were pared down to just two. The Base and SE models got the 114hp 2.0L 4 while the GT got the 2.5L, 164 hp V-6. Sales sadly lagged despite the redesign and the Probe was cancelled in 1997, despite being named Motor Trend's car of the year in 1993.
First Generation/Origins (1989–1992)[edit | edit source]
With gas prices threatening to rise to over 2 dollars a gallon by the end of the 1980's, Ford realized a need to replace the Mustang with a more economical car. Enter the Probe. Based off of the prototypes of the same name, the Probe was a Japanese, front drive coupe. To make the long story short, gas prices did not rise as expected and fans of the Mustang made their voice heard. The Probe came on to the market as a sporty alternative to other imports. Not as a replacement to the Mustang.
Worldwide[edit | edit source]
In Australia only the 2nd Gen Probe was sold. The GT was the ONLY model available. The differences include the speedometer in KM/h, right hand drive, amber directional turn-signals and sliding HVAC controls instead of the rotary dials. The GT was not reffered to as GT, instead it was reffered to simply as 24V
Design quirks and oddities[edit | edit source]
- The car was designed with the intent of being a "Gen-X" Ford Mustang.
