The Fiat 500 is a two-door, four-passenger, transverse front-engine, front-wheel-drive A-segment city car manufactured and marketed by the Fiat subdivision of Stellantis since 2007. It is available in hatchback coupé and fixed-profile convertible body styles, over a single generation — with an intermediate facelift in Europe with model year 2016. The 500 is internally designated as the Type 312 by FCA.

Derived from the 2004 Fiat Trepiùno 3+1 concept (designed by Roberto Giolito), the 500's styling recalls Fiat's 1957 Fiat 500, nicknamed the Bambino[9] — a model that was designed and engineered by Dante Giacosa with more than 4 million sold over its 18-year (1957-1975) production span. In 2011, Roberto Giolito of Centro Stile Fiat received Compasso d'Oro industrial design award for Fiat 500.

Manufactured in Tychy, Poland, and Toluca, Mexico, the 500 is marketed in more than 100 countries worldwide, including North America, where the 500 marked Fiat's market return after 27 years. With the millionth Fiat 500 produced in 2012; and production reaching 2 million in 2017, after 10 years, the 500 has won more than 40 major awards, including the CAR Magazine Car of the Year (2007) and the World's Most Beautiful Automobile.

Recent Changes

  • On September 09, 2009, Fiat and Abarth unveiled the limited edition Abarth 695 Tributo Ferrari. The Prancing Horse tribute features performance upgrades from Abarth including a tuned 1.4-liter turbocharged T-Jet 16v four pot developing "over 180 horsepower" and mated to an MTA (Manual Transmission Automated) electromechanical gearbox with race-inspired paddle gearshift that drives the front-wheels. It also gets performance tires that are fitted on 17-inch alloy wheels in a dark finish featuring a Ferrari inspired design, 284mm multi-section Brembo discs with four-piston calipers and a sportier suspension set up with new shock absorbers, "Record Monza" variable back-pressure dual mode exhaust designed to improve engine performance and deliver a more sonorous note over 3,000 rpm. Aesthetically, the 695 Tributo is distinguished by F430 Scuderia inspired red livery with carbon fibre door mirrors and racing stripes, wheels and rear air intakes in 'Racing Grey'. Inside, ultra-lightweight Sabelt bucket sport seats replace the standard seats, shedding 10 kg (22 lb) in the process, and finished in black leather. The steering wheel is also finished in black leather with red inserts and a tricolour hub. The new instrument panel features dials made by Ferrari's dial-maker Jaeger.[1]
  • Fiat has created another special edition 500 in conjunction with Diesel clothing and unveiled at the 2008 Paris Motor Show, called the 500 "Diesel".[2]
  • For 2009, Fiat has unveiled a 200 unit limited edition variant of the 500 called the 500 Ferrari Edition. As the name implies, the 500s will be given the "Ferrari Makeover" treatment including "Ferrari Red" paint, premium sound system, electric sunroof, automatic climate control, fog lights, Poltrona Frau leather interior, black steering wheel with red stitching, dash-mounted numbered plate, sporty aluminum pedals and 16-inch aluminum wheels w/ red brake calipers. The engine bay remains untouched, however, the exhaust has been tuned to make a growlier note. Unfortunately, you will never be able to buy one as it will only be available to Ferrari's European sales network as a courtesy "loaner" in case your prancing horse thoroughbred is in need of mending. [3][4]
  • For 2009, Fiat unveiled a hi-po version of their hit minicar dubbed the Fiat 500 Abarth. The car features new aggressive bodywork and a turbocharged version of Fiat's 1.4 litre Fire 16v Petrol engine producing 135 bhp (100kW) at 5,500 rpm and peak torque of 152 lb-ft (206Nm) at 3,000 rpm in ‘Sport’ mode. In normal mode the car produces only 133 pound feet of torque at 2,500 rpm. The icing on the cake is Fiat's new Torque Transfer Control, a system that allows the car to hug corners rather lose control from the torque steer.[5][6]

Hybrid Models

The 500 is going hybrid. Auto Express has learned that the in-demand Fiat will soon become even more appealing – with a petrol-electric engine that offers incredible fuel economy and super-low CO2 emissions.

It will be based on the company’s forthcoming 900cc two-cylinder unit – which will debut at July’s Goodwood Festival of Speed in West Sussex. The engine is mated to a motor and a battery pack, and will allow small cars like the 500 to run solely on electricity for short distances. Add a stop-start system and VW DSG-style twin-clutch gearbox, and it promises reduced CO2 emissions – engineers estimate a figure of below 90g/km!

That would help Fiat comply with the European Commission’s plans to impose an average 120g/km limit on the model ranges of all firms selling cars across the continent by 2012.

No details have been revealed on the engine’s output, but it’s likely to come in two forms, as previewed by the Panda Aria concept at last september’s Frankfurt Motor Show.

That car debuted the 900cc twin alongside a 105bhp turbo version, and Fiat also has plans for a normally aspirated 65bhp variant. The hybrid 500 is likely to benefit from other green technologies seen on the Aria, which include low-rolling-resistance tyres. The featherweight two-cylinder engine is 20 per cent lighter than a four-cylinder motor, so owners could expect 80mpg-plus fuel economy.

Alfredo Altavilla, boss of powertrain technologies at Fiat, told Auto Express the hybrid drivetrain should go into production in three years’ time. It would feature across Fiat’s small car range, making appearances in the Panda and Grande Punto.

And while the first petrol-electric cars may not be seen in showrooms until 2011, the all-new two-cylinder petrol engine will be available in the 500 before the end of the year.

Models

In addition to the distinct 500C (Cabrio), Abarth (full sport), and 500e (all-electric) models, the 500 is marketed variously around the globe with other trim levels — for example, the Sport and Turbo trim levels in the United States, and the Pop Star trim levels in Europe.

500C (2009–)

01-fiat-500c-1280

(Pre-Facelift Shown)

The fixed-profile convertible variant of the 500 debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2009 designated the 500C (C for Cabrio), historically recalling the fixed-profile convertible of the original 1957 Fiat 500, as well as similar fixed-profile convertibles such as the Vespa 400 (1957), Citroën DS 3 (2013), Nissan Figaro (1991), Citroën 2CV (1948–1990) and the Nash Rambler Convertible "Landau" Coupe (1950).

The 500C features fully stamped body-side panels retaining the hatchback 500's profile (door frames, roof pillars and side windows) to increase structural rigidity, reduce scuttle shake, and retain side and curtain airbags, in exchange for a less open experience than a fully pillarless convertible.[27] Weighing 40 kg (88 lb) more than its hatchback counterpart, the 500C features a slightly longer windshield than the hatchback, with a concealed and reinforced upper structural cross-member, a stronger front cross-member behind the instrument panel, a rear strut on which the retracted roof folds, reinforced B-pillars, and the rear anti-roll bar setup from the Abarth, high-performance model.

The top itself is a dual-layer, three-position power-retractable cloth top with a glass rear window, electric defroster and an integrated color-matched spoiler with a center high-mounted stop lamp that remains visible with the top in any position. The top retracts in three stages: over the two front passengers, overall four passengers (to the rear spoiler), and fully retracted with its stack folded behind the rear head restraints just above the rear cargo opening. The top is controlled either via the key remote or by open/close buttons at the windshield header adjacent to the interior ceiling light and retracts to the first two stages at speeds up to 60 km/h (37 mph), to its third stage at up to 80 km/h (50 mph)[27] — and is available in black, tan, or red.

With its 50/50 split-fold rear seats in their upright position, the 500C rear cargo capacity is reduced from 9 cubic feet (250 L) to 5.4 cu ft (150 L) compared to the hatchback, which offers 23.4 cu ft (660 L) of cargo volume with the 50/50 split-fold rear seats folded. At its rear trunk lid, the 500C features "parallelogram" liftgate hinges. When the rear cargo lid is opened while the top is fully lowered, the top automatically closes partially for greater cargo access. Because of limited rear visibility, 500C models are equipped with an ultrasonic rear park assist system to audibly indicate obstacles when backing.[27]

Abarth 500 (2008–)

1280px-2009 Abarth 500 1

(Pre-Facelift Shown)

The Abarth 500 is a performance model of the Fiat 500 tuned in-house by FCA's Abarth subsidiary. It was unveiled at the 78th Geneva Motor Show, a year after the rebirth of Abarth brand and company.[28] All models use a turbocharged and intercooled version of the 1.4 L Fire I4 petrol engine.

The Abarth 500's 1.4 L engine is equipped with an IHI RHF3-P turbocharger, and is rated at 135 PS (99 kW; 133 hp) at 5,500 rpm and 180 N⋅m (133 lbf⋅ft) (206 N⋅m (152 lb⋅ft) in sport mode) torque at 3,000 rpm. It includes a five-speed C510 transmission, low ride suspension, electric power steering with sport setting, 6.5 x 16" aluminium alloy rim with 195/45 R16 tyres and four-wheel disc brakes (front ventilated). Interior includes turbo pressure gauge, gear shift indicator, aluminum foot pedals, Blue&Me entertainment system with telemetry and GPS. The car costs £13,600 in the UK. A 5-speed automated manual transmission (called MTA) is available as an alternative to the manual transmission.

Later, in 2020 new very limited edition versions were released. These being the "Scorpioneoro" edition and the "Yamaha Monster Edition". The scorpioneoro is easily distinguishable thanks to its gold details found on the paintwork as well as wheels. The interior of the scorpioneoro also has unique features such as a scorpion specific pattern on the seats as well as gold stitching. The scoprioneoro has 165 hp, just like the Turismo variant. The Yamaha Monster Edition has been made to show the collaboration and shared passion between the Moto GP team and Abarth. The Yamaha Monster Edition is distinguishable thanks to its black and blue paint-job together with its Monster energy drink logos.

The Abarth version of the 500C (cabriolet) was unveiled at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show.[30] Abarth 500C has top speed of 205 km/h (127 mph) and it can accelerate from 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) in 8.1 seconds.[31]

Fiat 500e (2013)

1280px-2013-03-05 Geneva Motor Show 8283 Fiat 500e

(Taken On First Press Day)

A production battery electric Fiat 500e was unveiled in November 2012 at the Los Angeles Auto Show,[32] and sales began in the US state of California in July 2013,[33] expanding to Oregon in the summer of 2014;[34] these sales focused on states that had political mandates for sales of zero emission vehicles. Fiat-Chrysler stated from the beginning that there were no plans to make the 500e officially available in Europe.[35] The 500e was produced from 2013 until 2019; a second-generation electric 500 was announced in early 2020 and launched in Europe as Fiat New 500; the New 500 is not currently offered for sale in North America.

Deliveries began in California by July 2013,[33] and around 2,310 units were sold in the U.S. in 2013.[43] The Fiat 500e went on sale in Oregon in the summer of 2014,[34] and US sales are limited to just these two states.[44]

The American rollout was scheduled to continue to other states with mandates of sales of zero emission vehicles; for Europe, Fiat-Chrysler said in 2012 there were no plans to make the 500e officially available.[35] However, Scuderia-E has imported and sold used 500e vehicles which were originally on sale in the United States for the European market, refitted with higher-capacity batteries and a CCS combination socket for fast charging.[45]

The 500e is powered by a 111 hp (83 kW) and 147 lb⋅ft (199 N⋅m) permanent-magnet, three-phase synchronous-drive electric motor, and its 24 kWh liquid-cooled/heated li-ion battery delivers a range of 80 mi (130 km), and up to 100 mi (160 km) in city driving according to Chrysler.[32] The combination of alternating current motor, battery, and inverter has a claimed efficiency of 92%.[47] Charging time is less than four hours when connected to a 240 V AC source using the on-board 6.6 kW charging module.[32] Although the 500e does not come equipped with or offers as an option a DC fast charging connector, the development engineers state the car is equipped to handle charging at up to 480 V and 70 A if the appropriate connector is retrofitted to the car.[48]

The official U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) range is 87 mi (140 km).[49] Under its five-cycle testing, the EPA rated the 500e combined fuel economy at 116 mpg‑e (300 Wh/mi; 184 Wh/km) overall, 122 mpg‑e (280 Wh/mi; 175 Wh/km) in city driving, and 108 mpg‑e (320 Wh/mi; 198 Wh/km) on the highway.[50] Regenerative braking is employed to extend range;[47] under normal braking (i.e., excluding panic and emergency stops), the brake pedal engages only regenerative braking down to speeds of 8 mph (13 km/h), when the conventional mechanical brakes begin to engage.[48]

The Fiat 500e pricing started at US$32,500 including a US$700 destination charge and before any applicable government incentives. Leasing is available with a down payment of US$999 due at signing and US$199 per month lease for 36 months. The leasing pricing is the same as the current lease offer on a gasoline-powered Fiat 500 Pop.[60][57] Sergio Marchionne reported that Fiat loses $14,000 on every 500e it sells, and only produces the cars because California rules require automobile manufacturers who sell a certain number of cars in the state to sell a percentage of that total as zero emissions vehicles.[61]

Fiat New 500

The Fiat New 500 (project 332) is a battery-electric city car by Italian manufacturer Fiat. It was unveiled on March 4, 2020, in Milan, Italy; it was scheduled to be launched at the Geneva Motor Show, but that event was canceled. The New 500 car is manufactured at the Mirafiori plant in Turin and will be sold alongside the conventionally-powered 500 that was introduced in 2007, which will continue to be manufactured in Tychy, Poland. That 2007 car was used as the basis of a previous battery-electric Fiat 500e, which was sold only in the United States from 2013 and had a much smaller range than the New 500.

The New 500 has a 320 km (199 mi) range on the European WLTP Combined test, and achieves 400 km (249 mi) on that test’s Urban cycle, which is generally favourable toward electric vehicles. The car is powered by an 87 kW (116 hp) electric motor, fed by a 42 kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

Models

The New 500 was initially available only as a two-door cabriolet four-seater in the "La Prima" trimline, with production limited to 500 examples per country. The "La Prima" launch editions have a retail price of €37900 in Italy, before any local government incentives. "La Prima" was available in one of three colors: Mineral Grey, Ocean Green, and Celestial Blue, designed to be reminiscent of the earth, sea, and sky, respectively; the soft top was finished with an exclusive monogram logo.

A three-door hatchback followed in June 2020, starting at GB£26,995, and Fiat introduced a four-doored hatchback designated "3+1" in October of that year, with a small rear-hinged door on the passenger's side to enhance access to the rear seat, with availability limited to left-hand-drive cars. At that time, in the UK the entry-level three-door was offered at GB£22,995 as the "Action" model with a smaller 24 kW-hr battery; the more expensive "Passion" and "Icon" models were offered at GB£26,495 and GB£27,995, respectively, and were equipped with a 42 kW-hr battery. The top of the line remained "La Prima", at GB£30,495.

Limited production

Three additional one-off models styled by well-known designers were announced with the launch of the New 500; proceeds from the auctions of the 500 Giorgio Armani, B.500 "MAI TROPPO" ("never too much", by Bvlgari), and the 500 Kartell will benefit environmental organizations set up by Leonardo DiCaprio. The Kartell and Bvlgari models were created though a partnership between FCA and Altagamma. These were not the first Fiat-fashion limited editions; previously, Frida Giannini of Gucci had collaborated with Fiat Centro Stile to produce a special edition of the preceding Fiat 500 (2007 model), released in 2011.

Lasers were used to engrave the steel body panels are used on the Armani, which is finished in a "silk effect" grey-green matte finish which includes anti-pollution and anti-bacterial technologies. The seats are finished in a similar color leather from certified sources. After the car was unveiled in front of Duomo Cathedral, it was moved throughout Milan "to send a strong message of positivity to Italy, and to Milan in particular".

The Kartell is finished in a monochrome "Kartell blue" color, extending to metal, plastic, and rubber exterior surfaces. The wheels, front grille, side mirror housings, and dashboard are covered in a plastic texture derived from the brand's "Kabuki" lamp, and the seats are upholstered with 100% recycled polypropylene.

2016 facelift

1841014 200108 fiat-500-hybrid 03

Hybrid Model Shown

For model year 2016, the Fiat 500 and Fiat 500C received a facelift including redesigned grille and reshaped headlights incorporating daytime running lights with LED technology; revised 15" and 16" alloy wheels; new paint colors, rear bumper chrome strip with fog lights and rear taillights featured integrated LEDs. Interiors have revised controls and a redesigned steering wheel. Available trims are Pop, Pop Star, Lounge and S. Three engines are available in Europe: 1.2 petrol, 0.9 Twin Air petrol in either 85 or 105 hp setup, all Euro 6 emission compliant.

The facelifted 500 (and in some markets, the 1957 Edition) were introduced with strong product placement tie-ins with Charlie Puth's debut single, Marvin Gaye — in both the song's video as well as prominent print advertising.
