DesignworksUSA was a small independent design studio established in 1972 by designer Charles Pelly and co-founder Ray Carter in Malibu, California. Throughout its history, the company had several locations throughout the state including Van Nuys, Agoura Hills and Newbury Park. By the mid-90's it had been aquired by BMW and now functions as BMW's in-house design studio with three studios scattered across the globe, namely in California, Munich and Singapore. The outfit is responsible for designing all vehicles under the BMW umbrella, including Minis and Rolls-Royces, as well as a few outside projects from large multinational outside clients like Compaq, Singapore Airlines, Nokia, Adidas, Deutsche Bahn, Piper Aircraft, Intel, Motorola, John Deere, Hewlett-Packard and Procter & Gamble. It is now headed by Laurenz Schaffer, succeeding Verena Kloos, who took the helm herself from current BMW CoD Adrian van Hooydonk, with a staff of over 100.
