The Dacia Spring Electric (internal code BBG) is a battery electric crossover city car (A-segment) marketed by the Romanian car manufacturer Dacia since 2021. It was previewed by its concept model unveiled in March 2020. At its introduction, it was the cheapest electric car in Europe. The Spring Electric was also the second most popular model of electric car exported from China in the first eight months of 2021 – only behind Tesla's Model 3 – with a total of 17,398 units sold in that period.
Overview[]
The concept model of Spring Electric was unveiled on the web on 3 March 2020. It was to be presented at the 2020 Geneva Motor Show but the entire show was canceled, due to COVID-19 pandemic. It has a gray body colour enhanced with neon orange accents on the rims, the door handles, the mirrors and the grille.
The production model of Spring Electric was presented at Renault EWAYS conference on 15 October 2020 and marketed for early 2021. It went on sale in March 2021. Car-sharing services and cargo utility versions will also be launched later in 2021. The deliveries for companies started in early 2021, while for private customers in autumn of 2021.
The vehicle is heavily based on the Renault City K-ZE produced in China since 2019, which itself is based on the Renault Kwid produced in India and Brazil, and it is made on the CMF-A platform. In order to meet European safety standards, Spring Electric has been reengineered, featuring a reinforced chassis, six airbags and other assistance systems.
Powertrain[]
The Spring Electric is equipped with a single electric motor rated at 44 hp (45 PS; 33 kW) and 125 N⋅m (12.7 kg⋅m; 92.2 lb⋅ft) of torque. The claimed acceleration figure of 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) is 19.1 seconds. The electric motor is powered by a 27.4 kWh lithium-ion battery, permitting a claimed range of 230 km (143 mi) on the combined WLTP cycle and supports fast charging at a rate of up to 30 kW from a CCS DC charger.
Safety[]
The Dacia Spring was awarded a one star rating in the Euro NCAP crash test published in December 2021. Euro NCAP said the testing highlighted "a high risk of life-threatening injuries for driver chest and rear passenger head in frontal crash tests and marginal chest protection in side impact."
