The Chevrolet Suburban is a large sport utility vehicle from Chevrolet. It is one of the longest-lived automobile nameplates in the United States, dating from 1935.

Many automotive companies in the United States used the "Suburban" name to indicate a windowed, station wagon type body on a commercial frame including Dodge, Plymouth, Studebaker, Chevrolet, and GMC. With the end of production of the Dodge Town Wagon in 1966, only General Motors continued to manufacture a vehicle branded as a "Suburban", and they were awarded an exclusive trademark on the name in 1988. The Suburban is one of the largest SUVs on the market; it has three rows of seats and a normal-sized cargo area behind them.

As a brand new vehicle, there is no accurate long-term reliability information yet available for the 2007 Suburban.

  • RECALL ALERT: On August 29, 2008, GM issued a GM-wide recall (no.08V441000) affecting 857,735 vehicles built between 2006-2008 and equipped with heated windshield washer fluid option including the 2007-2008 Chevrolet Suburban. The system was liable to short out causing cessation of function, smoke, possible fire and malfunctioning of other electronic systems in the car. GM urges owners of affected vehicles to go to their nearest local dealer so the problem can be remedied.[1]

The 2007 Suburban got mixed results from safety tests carried out by the NHTSA. In both two wheel drive and four wheel drive tests for rollover, the Suburban managed a 3-Star rating. It fared better in front-impact crash tests, earning 5-Star ratings for both driver and passenger side impacts. The Suburban was not tested for side-impact. Some of the standard safety features found on the Suburban include:

Unique Attributes[]

Resale Values[]

According to Kelley Blue Book, "the Suburban holds a slightly better than average projected resale value, beating the Ford Expedition, Ford Excursion and Nissan Armada over a five-year period. The Toyota Sequoia retains more of its value over the same period."

  • "Unfortunately, many contemporary garages are just too small." - Popular Mechanics
  • "The optional cloth bucket seats in our LS were okay, but don't offer as much support as I'd like." - New Car Test Drive
  • "If you're shopping SUVs, our warnings of poor fuel economy and tight parking spaces are understood. Beyond that, about the only reason not to like the Suburban may be that it lacks some of the newer features found in other SUVs such as power-folding rear seats and side-airbag protection for second and third-row passengers." - Kelley Blue Book
  • "Steering wheel. Downright ugly and annoyingly off-center." - USA Today

Current Generation (2021-):[]

On December 10, 2019, Chevrolet introduced a twelfth generation Suburban at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan. This time around, GM chose to introduce the Chevrolet full size SUVs first. Originally scheduled to start in April 2020, GM began production on the Suburban on May 18, 2020, and entering dealerships in June 2020.

Based on the same GMT T1XX platform as the Silverado 1500, the Suburban distinguished itself by swapping that truck's live axle and leaf springs for an independent rear multilink suspension setup with coil springs, thus lowering the floor of the vehicle and creates more room in both the cargo area and the second- and third-row seats. The Suburban expanded its size length to 225.7 inches, and the wheelbase to 134.1 inches while shorted down by 15 inches longer due to the rear wheelbase moving back by 5 inches, making it the largest and longest SUV in the extended length segment. It gains 2.0 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row and 2.2 inches of third-row legroom. The towing capabilities was increased with the twelfth generation models.

The trims feature the primary basic LS, LT and Premier levels, with the 4WD-exclusive Z71 and RST moving from package to premium levels, along with the newly added High Country level, the latter being the top of the line. Chevrolet rolled out the LT, Z71, Premier, and High Country levels first, with the LS and RST levels arriving in late Fall 2020.

Quad exhaust tailpipes are added to the vehicle, giving it a more unique look, although this feature will only be standard on Premier and High Country only. This feature will not be offered on the LS, LT, Z71 and RST because of their configuration as a regular base, off-road, and street-centric level trims respectively, nor on all trims with a Duramax option. The RST Suburban, which had photos released in April 2020, will have a unique fascia and a more sportier design similar to its Cadillac Escalade ESV Sport level trim. Both Premier and High Country trims will have power-retractable assist steps that was optional on the Premier trim from the previous generation.

Although it retained a boxy look, it added a more curvy design with this change and adopted the same Chevrolet design language featuring the front grille and LED sinister-like lighting that is also used on the Silverado, save for the black-grilled Z71 (without the bumper) and RST. The tailgate is more front and center, with the signature "Suburban" name stretched across it. A combination of sheet metal and aluminum was used to ensure a more lightweight vehicle.

The dashboard and entertainment system have been fleshed out, moving away from the traditional design. Newly updated features include a 10.25-inch touch screen that is now standard on all trims, and a pair of 12.6-inch LCD rear screens that can play movies and offer content from passengers’ smartphones, and can play different programs on the two screens. A new push button shifter column (P, R, N, D) is placed on the dashboard, nine camera displays for enhanced towing capabilities and a total of 30 additional safety features have been implemented throughout the Suburban. An Air Ride Adaptive Suspension is standard on the higher trims, likewise with a 8-inch driver screen. Another new feature, a power sliding console, will become available later in late Summer or Fall 2020. The High Country Suburban will also have a Deluxe package option with advance features that will be exclusive to this trim only. The 40/20/40 front seat option that was available on the LS trim is now exclusive to fleet orders with this generation using the same base trim.

The Suburban will also feature a Duramax diesel engine as an option (available on all trims and packages except for the Z71) for the first time, and so far the only brand outside its competitors to have this option; a 3.0L I6 is used which produces 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. The 6.2L EcoTec engine that was reserved for the RST trim in the previous generation will now be exclusive to the High Country level trim. The engine choices added up to improved fuel economy numbers, albeit a increased MPG for city and a decreased MPG for highway. GM has no plans to offer this model in a 2500 or 3500 series version.

For international regions, Chevrolet started selling the twelfth generation Suburban in Mexico in August 2020, but unlike the United States and Canada, Mexico will only offer the Suburban in the LT, RST and High Country trims, and won’t offer the LS, Z71, or Premier level trims. They’ll neither offer the Duramax option for that country. The American-built models will use the GM 10-speed automatic transmission with Electronic Precision Shift technology, manufactured at the GM Silao Complex in the state of Guanajuato in central Mexico. The Philippines will also begin selling the 2021-present Suburban (with a possibility that it would offer a Duramax engine option in the country should Chevrolet make it available) in Fall 2020, followed by the Middle East region. A right-hand-drive version of Suburban for Australia and right-hand-drive markets to be done by Holden Special Vehicles, which was announced in December 2019, is on hold, citing the low demand, capacity issues at HSV, and highly competitive large luxury SUV and towing market in Australia, although that could change due to GM’s partnership with HSV to bring more American vehicles like the Suburban back down under the newly announced GMSV arrangement.

Eleventh Generation (2015-2020)[]

On September 10, 2013, GM announced that the twelfth generation Chevrolet Suburban would be introduced to the public on September 12, 2013 and unveiled the vehicle in New York on that date. It is based on the GMT K2XX platform and went go on sale in February 2014 as a 2015 model, with the vehicles built exclusively in Arlington, Texas.

GM released the photos and press release of the newly redesigned and was later showcased to the public for the first time on September 27, 2013, at the Texas State Fair. This move by the way comes on the heels of the 80th anniversary of the first production of the Suburban in 1934.

On September 18, 2013, Chevrolet confirmed that there will be no three-quarter ton version or diesel variant of the full-size SUVs planned for the 2015 model year (although it is looking at adding a 2500 HD variant trim during the 2016 model year), but in October 2014 bought the Z71 package back along with a Texas Edition. GM will also offer an off-road variant or trim for the Suburban starting with the twelfth generation, which is in the planning stages.

The front fascias of the Chevy Suburban are distinct, but from the base of the A-pillars back, it share most of the same styling cues with its sister large SUVs. This now includes inlaid doors that tuck into the door sills, instead of over them, which improves aerodynamics and fuel economy, and lessens interior noise. The hoods and liftgate panels now are made of aluminum in an effort to reduce vehicle weight, and the wiper blades that was located on the liftgate door is moved to the rear spoiler located on the top of the rear liftgate window. Also noticeable is the SUV's length, which expands from 222.4in to 224.4 in and its width from 79.1 in to 80.5 in, while the height decreases from 76.8 in to 74.4 in, thus allowing the vehicle to become slightly leaner, a little bit wider, more streamlined, and more roomier than ever. A more-efficient, direct-injected EcoTec3 5.3 V8 powertrain coupled with improved aerodynamics will now help offer greater estimated highway fuel economy for the SUVs, which GM hopes will improve its MPG and CAFE estimates, which will be announced before the vehicles go on sale.

Like the 2007-14 version, the Suburban do not share a single piece of sheetmetal or lighting element with the Silverado, and the front grille is slightly altered to give it their own identity. The front headlights will feature projector-beam headlamps that will flank the Chevrolet-signature dual-port grille – chrome on all models, sweeping into the front fenders, while the LTZ trims will feature high-intensity discharge headlamps and light-emitting diode daytime running lamps. The improved safety features will include a 360-degree radar detection for crash avoidance and occupant protection and an anti-theft system that include vertical and interior sensors, in-glass and window breaking, a triggering alarm and a shutdown device that prevents the vehicle from moving.

Also new are the addition of fold-flat second and third-row seats (replacing the removable third seats), which is now a standard feature but can be equipped with an optional power-folding feature for the upgraded trims, and an additional two inches of leg room for second-row passengers. Multiple USB ports and power outlets are now spreaded throughout their interiors, including one 110-volt, three-prong outlet, with the Suburban adding an available eight-inch color touch screen radio with next-generation MyLink connectivity along with an available rear-seat entertainment system with dual screens and Blu-ray DVD player. GM's third-generation magnetic ride control suspension will be optional on the Suburban LTZ models, whose upgraded features will also include a real-time damping system that delivers more precise body motion control by "reading" the road every millisecond, and changing damping in just five milliseconds.

Previous Generation: (GMT900:2007-2014)[]

File:2007 Suburban 1500 blackdrivingleft.jpg

The Suburban was completely redesigned for the 2007 model year and were unveiled at the 2006 Los Angeles Auto Show in January. Production of the redesigned GMT900 Suburban and Yukon XL began at Janesville Assembly and Silao Assembly in March of 2006, with the vehicles arriving at dealerships in April. It receives new exterior styling as well as several updates to its interior and to its engineering. Some of the new features for 2007 include amenities like Ultrasonic rear park distance control and rearview camera, a remote start system, and a touchscreen navigation system. Engine power has been increased, and handling has been refined.

The new models have been redesigned with more modern styling, which has been seen on the already released Tahoes and Yukons. Interior quality has been substantially improved, and the seats have also been redesigned. Leather seating is standard in the LT2, LT3, and LTZ models. The available DVD-player and Navigation Radio screens have been increased in size, and the overall length of the Suburban has been increased by 2 inches.

The 2010 Chicago Auto Show hosted the unveiling of the 2,570 unit limited edition 75th Anniversary Diamond Edition Suburban. Built on top of the Suburban LTZ, the special 'burban celebrates the SUVs 75th anniversary with a White Diamond paint job, a new roof rack, special badging, and unique 20-inch chrome wheels. Inside, it features cashmere leather upholstery, 'Diamond Edition' sill plates, and embroidered front headrests as well as heated and cooled front seats, GPS navigation, a rearview camera, adjustable pedals, and Bluetooth connectivity.

The LT2 and LT3 Suburbans were dropped after the 2012 model year. The 2500 3/4-ton Suburbans were discontinued after the 2013 model year.

Previous Generations (GMT800:2000-2006)[]

As of 2006, Chevrolet sells two models of Suburbans: 1/2 ton 1500 model and 3/4 ton 2500 model. On the 1/2 ton model, a customer has a choice of four different trim levels: LS, LT, Z71, and LTZ. The first three offer the Vortec 5300 V8 (295 hp at 5200 rpm and 335 ft·lbf of torque at 4000 rpm). The latter trim choice has a Vortec 6000 V8 (335 hp at 5200 rpm and 375 ft·lbf of torque at 4000 rpm). On the 3/4 ton model, there are only two trim options, either LS or LT. These both come with a standard Vortec 6000 V8 or an available Vortec 8100 V8 (325 hp at 4200 rpm and 447 ft·lbf of torque at 3200 rpm). All types of the Suburban can either be 2WD or 4WD, except the LTZ, which is AWD.

Chevrolet began production of its all steel "carryall-suburban" in 1935. GMC brought out its version in 1937. These vehicles were also know as the "Suburban Carryall" until rebranded simply as the "Suburban" in the 1980s with the arrival of the SUV craze.

The General Motors Shared Platform[]

General Motors has produced these large SUVs for both its GMC and Chevrolet marques, but in 2000 the GMC version was renamed the Yukon XL; today the name is limited to vehicles produced under the Chevrolet marque. In 2003 Cadillac introduced its version of the Suburban, calling it the Escalade ESV. Notably, the Escalade ESV can only seat a maximum of 8 people; the Chevrolet and GMC models can each seat nine. Shorter versions of these vehicles are sold as the Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade. Versions with a pickup bed in place of the rear cargo box are sold as the Chevrolet Avalanche and Cadillac Escalade EXT.

The Suburban of the 1990s and 2000s is a full-size SUV with three rows of seating, a full pickup truck frame, and V8 engine power.

The Suburban is mostly sold in North America (United States, Canada and Mexico), The US Insular Territories, The Middle East, and The Philippines.

Design quirks and oddities[]

The trucks are popular with large suburban families due to their "go anywhere, haul anything" nature, but have been criticized for their excessive bulk and poor fuel economy.

In recent years, the Suburban has been popular as a police car, fire chief's vehicle, or EMS fly-car. Suburbans are also popular when converted for duty as a limousine.
