The BMW M8 GTE is a endurance grand tourer (GT) car constructed by the German automobile manufacturer BMW. It was developed in late 2016 and make its competitive début in IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and FIA WEC from 2018 season respectively and thus marking BMW Motorsport returning to 24 Hours of Le Mans after six-year absence that last time BMW competed in 2011. It was designed by BMW chief engineer Dominic Harlow. The M8 GTE, which replaced the ongoing BMW M6 GTLM at the end of the 2017 season, is based on the production BMW M8. The car was unveiled on 12 September 2017 during 2017 Frankfurt Auto Show in Frankfurt, Germany.
Development history[]
BMW began development, design and construction of the M8 GTE in mid-2016. The first chassis was assembled in June 2017, with the first vehicle completed in July.

2018[]
The BMW M8 GTE made it's racing debut at the 2018 24 Hours of Daytona finishing 7th and 9th in GTLM. At the 12 Hours of Sebring, the #25 BMW Team RLL M8 GTE finished 2nd in class giving the car it's first podium finish. BMW made its WEC debut at the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps finishing 5th and 8th in GTE Pro. During the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the cars size became center stage in a series of memes after the #81 Team MTEK entry was battling for position against the #69 Ford GT resulting in humorous photoshops. The #82 crashed out while the #81 finished 11th in GTE Pro. The #25 Team RLL M8 GTE won at Virginia International Raceway and Laguna Seca.
