Recent Changes[]
- For 2011, BMW collaborated with high-end piano maker Steinway & Sons to create the Individual 7-Series Composition. Available in white or black, the Composition features a hand polished paint job with three-stage (layers) clear coat, high-gloss Shadow Line trim, a gold coachline and 20-inch alloy wheels. To mimic piano keys, the interior has a color scheme that contrasts with the exterior (i.e., black models have a white interior and white models have a black interior). Furthermore, the cabin is elegantly appointed with Merino leather, piano black trim, lambswool floor mats, an Alcantara headliner, and headrests embroidered with the Steinway & Sons logo.
- For 2009, the 7-series is all-new. Set to officially debut at the 2008 Paris Motor Show in October. The new 7 will come bristling to the bone with new technologies such as Active Blind Spot Detection, Night Vision with new Pedestrian Detection, Side View and Back-up Cameras, Active Cruise Control (Stop-Start) and a new Integral Active Steering to supplement the 7's Active Steering system. Under the hood, the big news is that the new car will be motivated by the BMW X6's 4.4-liter, twin-turbo V8, churning 400 hp and 450 lbs-ft of torque and attached to a revised 6-speed automatic transmission - all of which allows this luxobarge to hurtle from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 5.2 seconds.Other engine options, however, will include a 240 hp (180 kW) 3.0L diesel and a 335 hp (250 kW) 4.0L V8. The biggest news for the car, however, are the toning down or complete repeal of the controversial concepts that was introduced by the outgoing model; namely: Chris Bangle's "flame surface" design treatment and the iDrive system. For instance, the infamous "Bangle butt" has been laid to rest (or at least omitted from the new car), the gear lever makes a return to the center console, as well as the driver-oriented dashboard layout and 4-ringed instrument cluster. Overall, the new car is sleek, taut and handsome - a very welcome departure from the confused, dumpy and incoherent design of the last one. The iDrive, to the ire of some, has not been killed off. However, the system has been heavily revised and BMW promise it will be much more intuitive and user-friendly than the first one. [1][2]
- In 2005, a mid-cycle facelift was shown with different headlights and also different taillights. The car also featured new rims, new bumpers, colors, interior colors and a simplified iDrive. The 4.4 V8 N62B44 engine was replaced with a 4.8 V8 N62B48. Another facelift is also due in 2008 with different rims and new features, such as RealTime Traffic with a simplified iDrive and a standard electric folding mirror.

Criticisms[]
Criticisms have been directed towards the most recent generation of the 7 series the E65/E66. These criticisms have centred around the styling of the car and in particular the rear quarter panel and bootline. This styling was developed by current BMW design chief, the American Chris Bangle. Some users also find the iDrive complicated to use and distracting.
Generations[]
There have been four generations of the 7 Series:
- BMW E23 (1977–1986)
- BMW E32 (1987–1994)
- BMW E38 (1995–2001)
- BMW E65/E66 (2002–2008)
- BMW F01/F02 (2009-2015)
Seventh generation (G70; 2022)[]
The seventh generation of the BMW 7 Series (model code G70) are luxury saloons consisting of internal combustion versions and a battery electric version known as the BMW i7. It was introduced by BMW on 20 April 2022 during the nameplate's 45th anniversary.[
Overview[]
The G70 7 Series is offered with petrol, petrol plug-in hybrid, diesel, and battery electric powertrains, with the latter being marketed as the i7. A V12 petrol engine option is no longer offered.[4] The vehicle is only available in long-wheelbase form, with 130 mm (5.1 in) longer exterior dimensions, 48 mm (1.9 in) wider and 51 mm (2.0 in) taller compared to the previous generation long-wheelbase model.
In Europe, initial range only includes the i7, while internal combustion versions will be available at a later date which are 740d xDrive with 300 PS (296 hp; 221 kW) B57 3.0-litre turbo six-cylinder, along with two plug-in hybrid models which are 750e xDrive and M760e xDrive which will also be offered worldwide. The M760e xDrive will be the successor to the V12-powered M760i.[5
In North America, three trims will be available for late 2022 introduction, including the i7 xDrive60. The internal combustion versions are the 740i and 760i xDrive, both equipped with mild hybrid.[6]
Sixth generation (G11/G12; 2015)[]
The sixth generation of the BMW 7 Series consists of the BMW G11 (normal version) and BMW G12 (long-wheelbase version) luxury saloons. The G11/G12 generation has been produced by BMW since 2015, and is often collectively referred to as the G11.
The G11 was unveiled on 10 June 2015 at BMW's headquarters in Munich.[4] An official public reveal took place at the 2015 International Motor Show Germany. This generation of the 7 Series is the first car lineup of BMW to be based on the CLAR platform.[5] The CLAR platform adopts technology first introduced in BMW i models, namely the introduction of carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer as structural chassis components. Long-wheelbase cars have the letter "L" in their model name.
Development and launch[]
The international launch of the new BMW 7 Series was at the 2015 Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Held in September 2015. The lead exterior designer is Nader Faghihzadeh[9] and Alexey Kezha (facelift).[
Production commenced in July 2015 at the Dingolfing manufacturing plant in Germany,[11] with global vehicle sales starting in October 2015.
Design[]
The G11 and G12, which are the respective codenames for the short and long wheelbase models, are the first passenger BMW vehicles to be based on the modular BMW CLAR (cluster architecture) platform.[
The passenger cell of the 7 Series is made of carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP), tensile steel and aluminium, resulting in a lower kerb weight, lower centre of gravity and maintaining a 50/50 axle load distribution. The usage of CFRP allows for weight reduction due to being lighter than steel and aluminium. CFRP also increases structural strength in areas exposed to high steering forces, as it is capable of diverting impact forces to prevent deformations of the material, resulting in higher torsional rigidity.[16] Aluminium has been applied to the doors, boot lid, brake system, wheel hubs and rear suspension arms, further reducing weight and unsprung masses. The G11's body weighs overall 40 kg (88 lb) less than that of its predecessor.[
The front features a large signature kidney grille incorporating grille shutters that will only open when an increase of air flow to the engine bay is required, decreasing aerodynamic drag in the process. Along with air openings behind the front wheel arches that reduce turbulence in the wheel housings, the drag coefficient has been reduced to 0.24.[
The standard self-levelling air suspension of the previous model has been reworked, featuring air springs at both axles with electronically-controlled shock absorbers that can automatically adjust damping according to the environment. The active anti-roll system is optionally available with an electro-hydraulic actuator that improves damper reaction times. For the first time, four-wheel steering, marketed as Integral Active Steering, has also become available for all-wheel drive models.[
Equipment[]
The iDrive operating system for secondary car controls now receives user input from a conventional control wheel, touchscreen, voice commands[20] and is capable of recognizing gestures through a 3D scanner. It is also possible to save a gesture movement with an individual function.
A number of advanced driver assistance systems for the BMW 7 Series have been reworked to work autonomously or partly so—the parking system utilises a number of radar sensors and a stereo camera at the rear, allowing it to execute parking manoeuvres independently and can be operated with a digital key fob. The cruise control driver assist is able to recognize speed limits and will adjust the vehicle's speed accordingly. The lane driving assist warns the driver of possible side or rear collisions. In addition, it is able to detect lane markings and traffic, as well as alter the steering responsiveness to improve driving comfort.[
All models can be fitted with M Performance Parts. The parts are a black grille, carbon fibre mirrors, side skirts and sport brakes for facelift models.
Special editions[]
740e/740Le iPerformance[]
In February 2016, BMW announced the introduction of the "iPerformance" model designation, which was to be given to all BMW plug-in hybrid vehicles from July 2016. The aim is to provide a visible indicator of the transfer of technology from BMW i to the BMW core brand. The new designation will be used first on the plug-in hybrid variants of the latest BMW 7 Series, the BMW 740e iPerformance being the first of such plug-in hybrids.
The 740e iPerformance was unveiled at the 2016 Geneva International Motor Show, together with the new BMW M760Li xDrive and the BMW i8 Protonic Red Edition special-edition model.[31] Sales of the 740e iPerformance began in Germany in July 2016.
The 740e iPerformance features the same drivetrain as the BMW X5 xDrive40e plug-in hybrid, and has an all-electric range is 40 km (25 miles), dropping to 37 km (23 miles) in the xDrive version, both under the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC).[33] Under the EPA test cycle, the all-electric range was rated at 23 km (14 miles). According to EPA, the 740 burns some petrol during the first 23 km (14 miles), so the actual all-electric range varies between 0 and 23 km (0 and 14 miles).[34
The 740e iPerformance mates a turbocharged 190 kW (255 hp) 2.0-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor, resulting in a combined power output of 240 kW (322 hp) and 400 N⋅m (295 lb⋅ft) of torque.[35] BMW's Auto eDrive function allows drivers to choose how the car operates and features modes for pure electric driving and performance. Drivers can also select from the usual Eco Pro, Comfort and Sport modes too. The 740e can be charged in less than four hours from a domestic socket, or in under three hours from a wall charger.[33] All models get an eight-speed automatic transmission as standard. The 740e can sprint to 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) in 5.6 s—the long-wheelbase version is 0.1 s slower while the xDrive variant is 0.1 s faster.[
Official fuel economy figures under the NEDC test are 2.100 L/100 km (134.5 mpg‑imp; 112.0 mpg‑US), with CO2 emissions of 49 g/km (2.8 oz/mi). The 740e is available in both standard and long-wheelbase forms, and also as an all-wheel drive xDrive variant. In all-wheel drive variation, the 740e returns 2.300 L/100 km (122.8 mpg‑imp; 102.3 mpg‑US) and emits 53 g/km (3.0 oz/mi) of CO2.[33] Under the EPA test cycle, the BMW 740e xDrive iPerformance has a combined city/highway fuel economy rating of 3.7 L/100 km (64 mpg‑US; 76.9 mpg‑imp), corresponding to an energy consumption of 1.2 MJ/km (52 kWh/100 mi). When running only on gasoline, the EPA-rated fuel economy is 8.7 L/100 km (27 mpg‑US; 32 mpg‑imp).
Alpina B7[]
The Alpina B7 xDrive was announced by BMW North America in February 2016 with sales starting in September. With an electronically limited top speed of 310 km/h (193 mph) and a 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) acceleration time of 3.7 seconds along with a sportier setup, it is the sportiest 7 Series but is sold by BMW only in the United States and Canada.[36] The B7 is sold in other countries by Alpina as the B7 Bi-Turbo, with a delimited top speed of 330 km/h (205 mph).
The Alpina B7 features a 447 kW (599 hp) 4.4 litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine delivering 800 N⋅m (590 lb⋅ft) of torque and a more luxurious interior. It was unveiled at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show.
The facelift model was unveiled on 11 February 2019. The power band of the engine is improved, with the maximum 800 N⋅m (590 lb⋅ft) of torque now being available from 2,000 rpm, and the output of 447 kW (599 hp) between 5,500 and 6,500 rpm.[37] Acceleration from 0–100 km/h (62 mph) is achieved in 3.6 seconds while the 330 km/h (205 mph) top speed is now unlimited worldwide.[37] Public introduction took place at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show and deliveries began during July.
M760Li xDrive[]
The M760Li xDrive is the top trim of the 7 Series. It was unveiled in February 2016 and made its official public debut at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show. It is powered by BMW's N74B66 engine, a 6.6-litre twin-turbocharged V12 which generates a maximum power output of 449 kW (602 hp) and 800 N⋅m (590 lb⋅ft) of torque.[39] If the optional M Driver's Package is specified, the limited top speed is raised to 305 km/h (190 mph), versus 250 km/h (155 mph) as standard. As the first 7 Series to be an M Performance model, the M760Li receives technical upgrades over the standard 7 Series as standard equipment, including M Performance-specific tuning of the transmission's shift programmes, 19-inch (480 mm) M Sport brakes, an M Sport exhaust system, performance tyres and standard fit Integral Active Steering. It is also the first V12-powered BMW model ever made to feature xDrive as standard, breaking the trend of the previous V12-engined BMWs which were only rear-wheel drive.
The M760Li features several visual cues to differentiate it from base 7 Series models. These include a 20-inch (510 mm) alloy wheel design exclusive to the M760Li. Several pieces of exterior trim are finished in "Cerium Grey", most notably the mirror caps, side "Air Breathers" and the tailpipe embellishers. There are V12 badges on the C-pillars, and a unique tailpipe design at the rear.
The M760Li can also be specified as an "Excellence" top of the range model. This receives modifications to the exterior and interior which create a luxurious appearance, compared to the sporty aesthetics of the standard M760Li.
Facelift[]
The updated 7 Series models were unveiled on 16 January 2019[42] as 2020 model year cars. Notable changes of the facelift include a larger kidney grille shared with the X7 (40 percent larger than the outgoing model)[42] and sleeker headlights with optional laser headlights. The V8 models and the hybrid models were updated and a new hands-free driving system which operates under certain conditions was added to the range.
The new front is accompanied by a more prominent front fascia and a power dome on the bonnet. The rear of the car now has LED tail lamps joined by a central stripe and a new rear bumper. Other exterior changes include new optional 20-inch (510 mm) wheels.
Updates to the interior include a new 12.3-inch (310 mm) instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch (260 mm) infotainment screen. A new voice assistant is also added to the infotainment system along with the BMW iDrive system 7.0 with updated graphics and menus. The main technological feature is the Extended Traffic Jam Assistant which allows the driver to leave the steering wheel at speeds up to 56 km/h (35 mph) during urban city driving. The system manages steering, acceleration and braking of the car and cameras ensure that the driver pays attention on the road.
The turbocharged B58 inline-6 as utilised in the 740i/740Li is now rated at 290 kW (389 hp) and 450 N⋅m (332 lb⋅ft) of torque.
The 750i/750Li now shares the same engine enhancements as the M850i which now generates a power output of 390 kW (523 hp) and 750 N⋅m (553 lb⋅ft) of torque. The rear-wheel-drive option for the 750i/750Li was discontinued, making the 740i/740Li the only model to be available with optional rear-wheel-drive.
The 740e/740Le hybrid model was discontinued in favour of the updated 745e/745Le iPerformance. The 745e/745Le iPerformance uses a turbocharged inline-6 engine shared with the X5 xDrive45e. The new engine combined with electric motors generates a power output of 290 kW (389 hp) and 599 N⋅m (442 lb⋅ft) of torque. A new 12 kW⋅h battery pack is employed for the electric motors to increase the electric range.
The M760Li xDrive oversaw a decrease in engine power output to 447 kW (599 hp), although the engine benefited from torque increased to 850 N⋅m (627 lb⋅ft) for the US model. The engine in the European model generates a power output of 430 kW (577 hp).
Fifth generation (F01/F02/F03/F04; 2009)[]
The fifth generation of the BMW 7 Series consists of the BMW F01 (sedan version) and BMW F02 (long-wheelbase sedan version) full-size luxury sedans. The F01/F02 generation was produced by BMW from 2008 to 2015 and is often collectively referred to as the F01.
The F01 was the first BMW vehicle to be available with a hybrid drivetrain, an 8-speed automatic transmission and a turbocharged V12 engine. It was the second 7 Series to be available with a turbocharged petrol engine (the first being the European E23 745i), and all-wheel drive (xDrive). The wheelbase was increased by 8 cm over the outgoing 7 Series. Other model codes used for this generation were F03 for the "High Security 7 Series" armoured car and F04 for the "ActiveHybrid 7" hybrid-electric model.
Development and launch[]
The car's exterior was designed by Lebanese automotive designer Karim Habib. The styling retained some elements from its E65 7 Series predecessor but was a less controversial approach. The headlamps were reminiscent to the E65 but were smaller and sleeker. The car incorporated a wider and bigger kidney grille that went deeper into the front apron for a more aggressive appearance. The F01 7 Series was larger than its predecessor adding 1.7 in (43.2 mm) to the overall length and 3.2 in (81.3 mm) to the wheelbase while gaining more weight.
The car was first revealed to the public in the Red Square in Moscow (Russia) on 8 July 2008. Other launch events included the Paris Motor Show in October[8] and the Los Angeles International Auto Show in November.
Equipment[]
The F01 was available with rear-wheel steering (Integral Active Steering), all-wheel drive (xDrive), eight speed automatic transmission, pedestrian recognition for the night vision feature, blind spot monitoring, massage function for the rear seats and the radar cruise control system was now able to completely stop the car and accelerate from a standstill (Active Cruise Control with Stop and Go).
Side cameras were fitted in the front bumper to assist with merging and exiting narrow spaces. By combining these cameras with the front and rear cameras, the F01 can display a virtual overhead graphic of the car to assist with parking.[12] The instrument cluster has an LCD backdrop (with the gauge needles and rings still present as physical objects), allowing various graphics to be shown.[13] A lane departure warning system - as fitted to the E60 5 Series since 2007 - was also available for the first time in a 7 Series.[14
Departures from the non-traditional interior design of the E65 include the transmission shifter being relocated to the centre console (previously a stalk on the steering column) and the seat controls being relocated to the outside edge of the seat base (previously located in the centre console).[15]
Special Models[]
High Security (F03)[]
The 750Li High Security and 760Li High Security models are the first cars to be certified with BRV 2009 and VR7 ballistics protection ratings.[23] Security upgrades include undercarriage armour, 60 mm (2.4 in) thick multi-layer laminated glass and armour plating on the doors, roof, body pillars, front footwell and rear bulkhead.[24] Due to the added weight of the security upgrades, suspension components such as the shock absorbers and strut tops were upgraded. Options included an intercom system between the passengers and the driver, an alarm, a fire extinguisher with temperature sensor, irritant gas sensors (to warn of dangerous gasses in the passenger area), a fresh-air supply system and a compartment for two machine guns in the centre console.[25]
The High Security models were unveiled in GPEC 2012.
ActiveHybrid 7 (F04) (2010–2015)[]
The ActiveHybrid 7 was the first BMW vehicle to use a hybrid drivetrain. The concept was unveiled as the Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid at the 2008 Paris Motor Show[27] and the 2008 Los Angeles International Auto Show.[9] The production version was unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show,[28] and shown again later at the Monaco Yacht Show 2010.[
The production version called the ActiveHybrid 7 uses the engine from the 750i plus an electric motor rated at 15 kW (20 hp) and 210 N⋅m (155 lb⋅ft) of torque. The electric motor is integrated into the transmission housing, replacing the alternator and the starter. The battery is a lithium-ion type and located under the boot floor.[30] Other features include an auto start/stop system. and an 8-speed automatic transmission. The hybrid system was based on the 2-mode hybrid from Daimler AG. The regenerative braking unit includes 12 V Absorbent Glass Mat batteries, running in parallel to a 120 V electrical network for electric motor. BMW claims it improved fuel consumption and reduced emissions by 15% over the non-hybrid model.[31][
The wheelbase of the ActiveHybrid 7 is extended by 14 cm (5.5 in)[33] and the car weighs 100 kg (221 lb) more than a regular 750i. The car's exterior profile was designed by Karim Habib, Team Leader, Advanced Design for BMW in Munich, Germany.[34]
The fuel economy benefits of the ActiveHybrid 7 were questioned by reviewers, since the EPA consumption ratings of 17 mpg‑US (13.8 L/100 km) city and 26 mpg‑US (9.0 L/100 km) are not significantly better than the significantly cheaper 740i model's ratings of 17 mpg‑US (13.8 L/100 km) city and 25 mpg‑US (9.4 L/100 km) highway.[35] The contemporary 740i was powered by a conventional petrol engine (the turbocharged N54 six-cylinder). The 740i has 108 kg (239 lb) less weight than the 750i over the front axle.
In late 2012, the ActiveHybrid 7's powertrain was significantly changed, switching from the 750i's turbocharged 4.4 litre V8 engine to the turbocharged 3.0 litre six-cylinder engine from the 740i.[37] The electric motor was upgraded to 41 kW (55 hp).[38] The 2012–2015 ActiveHybrid 7 was only available as a long-wheelbase model.[39] Fuel economy was significantly improved for the updated drivetrain, which was rated at 22 mpg‑US (10.7 L/100 km) city and 30 mpg‑US (7.8 L/100 km) highway.[
Alpina B7[]
The Alpina B7 is based on the 750i and began production for the 2011 model year. The vehicle was unveiled in 2010 Chicago Auto Show, and went on sale in Spring of 2010. Production version went on sale as 2011 model year vehicle.[41] The Alpina B7's engine is assembled by hand at Alpina's facility in Buchloe, Germany, before being shipped to BMW for installation,[42] and the assembled vehicle is then sent back to Alpina for finishing touches.
In the 2010–2012 B7, Alpina's variant of the N63 twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 engine rated at 373 kW (500 hp) and 700 N⋅m (516 lb⋅ft), with the same fuel economy figures as the regular 750i.[44] Compared with the regular N63 engine, the Alpina variant includes high-performance pistons, strengthened cylinder heads, an additional radiator and external coolers for the engine oil and transmission oil.[45] Larger and lighter turbochargers are fitted and boost pressure is increased from 0.8 bar (11.6 psi) to 1.0 bar (14.5 psi).[42] The F01/F02 B7 marks the first time that BMW M and Alpina used the same type of forced-induction for their engines; Alpina's engine has less horsepower but more torque than the S63 variant used in the F10 M5.[46
The transmission is a ZF 6HP26 6-speed automatic with heavy-duty gears, and the B7 includes a strengthened drive shaft, differential and rear axles.[47] The B7 also features a choice of regular or long-wheelbase and/or rear-wheel drive or xDrive.[
In late 2012, the B7 received a mid-life update in line with other models of the 7 Series. The updated B7 was unveiled at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in August 2012 and went on-sale immediately thereafter.[49] Power output increased to 397 kW (532 hp), and top speed increased to 312 km/h (194 mph) (310 km/h (193 mph) on xDrive models).
In North America, the BMW Alpina B7 is officially sold by BMW and have BMW VINs, whereas the Alpina B7 BiTurbo sold in Europe and Japan are sold as vehicles manufactured by Alpina.
Fourth Generation: (2002–2008)[]
The current 7 Series is available on two different platforms: the standard-wheelbase E65 (2990 mm, 118 in) and the extended-wheelbase E66 (3130 mm, 123 in).
This car was also the first production BMW to be styled by Chris Bangle. The styling is controversial and has received mixed reviews.
The E65/E66 7 Series features BMW's iDrive system, consisting of a video screen in the dashboard and a controller mounted on the center console that is used in a similar way to a computer mouse. Using a system of eight menus, most of the car's climate, audio, navigation, suspension and communication settings are controlled via iDrive. However, the system has been criticized by some for being too complex and for distracting the driver from the road.
"Active" Seat continuous passive motion technology is made standard equipment on the 750/760 models and included in the Luxury Seating Package with heated and ventilated seats for driver and front passenger on the 745 models.
The car is available in eleven variants:

Also, note that in the Americas, only the 745i, 745Li, 750i, 750Li, 760i and 760Li are sold and that the 740d is only available in mainland Europe.
2005[]
The 7 Series was refreshed for 2005 with tweaked front and rear styling and a larger, more powerful V8 engine.
Considerable work went into the rear quarter of the car to reduce the "Bangle Butt" design. The refreshed 7 Series sport a new taillight and reduced height for the trunk lid. The front headlight and the kidney grille was also raised a tad, as well as a new front air dam.

*0–62 mph
**All roadgoing BMWs have an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.
The 4.4 L V8 was replaced by a 4.8 L unit producing 360 hp (269 kW) and 360 ft·lbf (488 N·m). The new model with the enlarged engine is now known as 750i and 750Li (for the long wheel-base model). The 750i and 750Li replace the 745i and 745Li in all world markets. The 745d, powered by a 4.4 L diesel producing 295 hp (220 kW), replaces the 740d. As before, a six-speed automatic transmission with Steptronic is standard on all models.
Pricing (MSRP) for the 750i begins at around $71,800 USD and for the 750Li at $75,800 USD.
Third generation (1995–2001)[]
The E38 generation (1995-2001) had a five-speed automatic or manual transmission. The engine variants in Europe were 725tds, 728i, 730i, 730d, 735i, 740i (4.0 and 4.4 L), 740d and 750i (with a 5.4 L 322 bhp [240 kW] engine, as was used in the Rolls-Royce Silver Seraph).
In the Americas, the models were sold as the 740i, 740iL and 750iL. The 740i and 740iL share the same 4.4 L V8 engine. The 740iL is essentially a longer wheelbase 740i (hence the "L" in the model name). The considerably rarer 5.4 L V12-powered 750iL was only available as a long-body; there was no E38 750i in the US lineup. The 750iL was BMW's flagship sedan.
A performance-enhancing sport package was available in the 740i as well; cars with this package are called the 740i Sport. A separate sport package was finally offered in the 740iL and 750iL in 2001, the final year of E38 production.
Features of the E38 7 Series included high-pressure headlight washers, auto-leveling Xenon low-beam headlamps, power moonroof, a six-CD changer with 14 speakers and four subwoofers, onboard navigation and rain-sensing wipers. Other features included an automatic climate control system with full left/right controls and a 3-position memory system for the driver’s seat, safety-belt height, steering wheel and outside mirrors. Front side airbags and a Head Protection System (HPS) were also standard. The car featured an all-leather interior with burl walnut trim. The continuous passive motion "Active" seat technology was introduced in 1998 to improve comfort for the driver and front passenger.
The 5-speed automatic transmission came with Adaptive Transmission Control, Sport and Manual modes for responsive handling.
The base prices in 2001 were US$62,900 for the 740i, US$66,900 for the 740iL and US$92,100 for the 750iL.
740iL and 750iL Protection Line light-armored vehicles were built from 2000-2001, and cost US$99,100 and US$124,400, respectively. These models included body armor, bullet-resistant glass and run-flat tires.
A rare executive V12-powered stretch limousine was also produced, called the BMW L7.
Second generation (1987–1994)[]
The E32 was introduced in 1987, with the 730i and 735i featuring 3.0l and 3.5l straight-6 engines respectively, and a new, 5-liter, 300 horsepower V12 engine for the 750i. In 1992, 3.0l and 4.0l V8 engines were added to the lineup (730i and 740i). All models were also available in a stretched 'L' version, which had 10 cm of extra legroom for the rear passengers. See BMW E32 article for more information.
First Generation/Origins (1977–1986)[]
Models offered were the 725i, 728, 728i/iS, 730, 730i, 732i, 733i, 735i, 745i Turbo, 745i South Africa, and L7. (More information about the BMW E23)
