Report[]

Race[]

Mika Häkkinen took an instant lead from Michael Schumacher after the start. Eddie Irvine was ahead of Barichello, Frentzen, Ralf Schumacher, Hill and Alesi. Villeneuve was left stranded on the grid after a clutch problem. Häkkinen's retirement put Schumacher into the lead of the Grand Prix.[1] On lap 17, Häkkinen clipped the kerb at the end of the Variante Bassa chicane and turned left into a concrete wall.[2]
