The 1992 San Marino Grand Prix was a Formula One motor race held at Imola on May 17, 1992. It was the fifth round of the 1992 Formula One season.

Qualifying[]

Pre-qualifying saw both Andrea Moda cars eliminated. After the qualifying session, Nigel Mansell was on pole position, ahead of his Williams team-mate Riccardo Patrese. Senna and Berger in the two McLarens were on the second row followed by the two Benettons of Schumacher and Brundle on the third row. Alesi and Capelli in the Ferraris were in 7th and 8th position. Mika Häkkinen, Andrea Chiesa, Damon Hill and Eric van de Poele were the four drivers who failed to qualify for the race - for Häkkinen, it would prove to be the only race in the season where he failed to qualify.

Race[]

The first start was aborted due to Karl Wendlinger's March stalling; he eventually started the race at the back of the grid. Stefano Modena started the race from the pit lane.

Nigel Mansell won the race, ahead of Williams team-mate Riccardo Patrese and McLaren driver Ayrton Senna. Ayrton Senna was unable to take his place on the podium due to discomfort he suffered all race and was unable to get out of his car until long after the race ended. Mansell's win continued his perfect start to the 1992 season, with five wins out of the opening five races. This broke the record of successive wins from the start of the season set by Ayrton Senna in 1991.

Martin Brundle finished in fourth to pick up his first points of the 1992 season. Michele Alboreto finished fifth, and Pierluigi Martini finished sixth to pick up what would prove to be the Dallara teams' last point in Formula One.
