  • First Grand Prix start: J.J. Lehto
  • Nigel Mansell was suspended for this race following his disqualification and collision with Ayrton Senna in Portugal. Ferrari raced just one car at this race.
  • Gregor Foitek replaced Christian Danner at Rial but quit the team after the race when he suffered a heavy accident in qualifying caused by the rear wing falling off the car.
  • The Williams team raced 2 different cars at this race. Thierry Boutsen drove the new FW13 and Riccardo Patrese drove the FW12C for the last time.
