The 1987 World Sportscar Championship season was the 35th season of FIA World Sportscar Championship racing. It featured the World Sports-Prototype Championship which was a series which ran from March 22, 1987 to September 27, 1987 and was composed of ten races. The series was open to cars running under the Group C formula, with two classes known as C1 and C2. An invitational GTP class was also run for IMSA-spec cars. A Drivers Championship, an FIA Cup for Group C2 Drivers, a Teams Championship and an FIA Cup for Group C2 Teams were awarded by the FIA.

Drivers Championship[]
Points towards the 1987 World Sports-Prototype Championship for Drivers were awarded to the top 10 finishers in the order of 20-15-12-10-8-6-4-3-2-1. Additionally, two bonus points were awarded to drivers of Group C2 cars finishing in the top ten outright positions.[1] However the following exceptions applied:
- Drivers failing to complete a specified percentage of the laps in a race were not awarded points.
- Drivers of cars which did not complete 90% of the number of laps completed by the winning car were not awarded points.
Only the best seven round results could be retained towards a driver’s total.[2]
