Notes[]
- First race: Gerhard Berger
- For the first time in Formula One history none of the cars starting on the grid had a naturally aspirated engine.
- The race was restarted because of an improper starting procedure, due to the lights (according to Niki Lauda) going red, then green, then yellow and back to red again.
- During the first race, Elio de Angelis stalled on the grid and blocked a number of cars including Patrick Tambay, who came to a dead stop behind De Angelis and stalled his Renault. This fracas allowed Ayrton Senna to come up from 10th to 4th.
- This was the only time that Niki Lauda has won his home Grand Prix. His previous best was 2nd in 1977.
- Lap leaders:
- First race: Alain Prost (1)
Second race: Nelson Piquet (1-39) Niki Lauda (40-51)
- First race: Alain Prost (1)
