The 1983 IndyCar season, the fifth in the CART era of U.S. open-wheel racing, consisted of 13 races, beginning in Hampton, Georgia on April 17 and concluding in Avondale, Arizona on October 29. The PPG Indy Car World Series Drivers' Champion was Al Unser and the Indianapolis 500 winner was Tom Sneva. Rookie of the Year was Teo Fabi. The Series included the Indianapolis 500 after an absence of two seasons. As before, the 67th edition of the race was sanctioned by the USAC but counted in the CART points standings.
