Notes[]

  • Pole position: Jacky Ickx - 7:07.0[1]
  • Fastest lap: Jacky Ickx - 7:13.6[1]
  • Jacky Ickx took his last win in Formula One in this race, he beat François Cevert's 1971 fastest lap record by more than seven seconds, and smashed the pole position record set by Jackie Stewart in the latter year by a massive 13 seconds. He scored his only Grand Chelem (English:Grand Slam) (led and won the whole race from pole position and set fastest lap).
  • During the race, Jackie Stewart had a long battle for second place with Clay Regazzoni. On the last lap at Hatzenbach, Stewart and Regazzoni tangled, and Stewart crashed into the Armco barrier and destroyed the suspension in his Tyrrell. This was a huge blow for Stewart, as his great rival Emerson Fittipaldi had suffered a rare mechanical failure in his John Player Special Lotus (more specifically, the gearbox caught fire) and was forced to retire; and Stewart ultimately was not able to take advantage of Fittipaldi's breakdown, who was 1st in the driver's championship; and Stewart desperately needed points to catch Fittipaldi in the race for the Formula One Driver's Championship.
